Question Potty Training boys one day method??

Im wondering if anyone has ever used the one day potty training method Dr Phil has talked about? Im wondering if it really works, I have a 4 and half year old foster boy with some delays and would like to start and am looking for the best methods.

Summed up, the one day method is supposed to build muscle memory, you start with a potty doll for him to show, then make a big deal for the deal like a potty party, if he has an accident it is 10 trips to the potty to build the muscle memory. Here is a link: Dr. Phil.com - Advice - Potty Train Your Child In Less Than a Day

Anyways just looking for some tips, Its been a while since I potty trained any kids and have not trained any boys.

Depends on the child, for some kids getting them to "practice" 10 times just wouldn't happen. I think having a day where you give tons of juice and salty snacks (to make them more thristy) and keeping them right there with you so they can try again and again all day if a great idea, but depending on the child I think all of the "practicing" could scare the child, confuse them, or make them defiant. I think the pressure of so much practice could backfire with some children, but the idea is good (in theory).

The doll idea is great too! That was key here for all of my kids, especially my son who is slightly delayed, he got to teach the baby what to do and that translated very well into what he needed to do for himself. For him, being in control of something else really helped to keep him calm enough to try himself.

Anyways just looking for some tips, Its been a while since I potty trained any kids and have not trained any boys.

I just got done training my youngest son about 2 months ago....I didn't use the 1 day method....but one thing I did do that the 1 day method emphasizes is to take away ALL diapers and pull ups....that included at bed time and naps as well.

It involved me having to check on them more to ask them more about going to the bathroom and also getting up and night to take them to the potty...but within 3 weeks of no diapers or pull ups....my oldest son was fully potty trained and within a month my youngest son was fully potty trained. Both were around 2.5 y/o at the time. It was also great that I had daycares that were very supportive of my decision of no diapers and pullups, because a lot of schools require pull ups because they don't want to be bothered with the hassle.

They now go to the bathroom on their own if we are in our house and they ask now if we are in public....and they don't wet the bed at all....they even get up at night now and go to the bathroom without being told or asked if they have to go.

We didn't do the celebration, but we did have a potty song that we sang after we used the potty....and a potty book that we read.... I always give high fives for going potty and that helped as well....but for me the real key to them being fully potty trained was when I eliminated all diapers....

I have heard of the 3 day method, but never the 1 day method....but if either method has worked for anyone, please let me know I may try it the next time around....

If he is showing signs of interest then he's ready. If he's so delayed he has no interest then it may take a while before he is ready. I used the doll with my 2. 5 yr old FD and it has worked great. She is teaching the doll to potty and she is going as well.

When my son was little..wow 18 yrs ago...He loved mickey mouse, so I bought a pack of mickey undies and told him not to pee on Mickey because it would make him really sad and he might cry...well, when he peed of course it ran down his leg and it really upset him to think that the pee was actually mickeys "tears" he never had another accident.. I tried this after trying other methods that didnt work..

I tried this method (Toilet Training in a Day) with my oldest when he was just 18m old. He wasn't ready and I think I just frustrated both of us. So I let it go, and when he was ready, he trained himself in a day.

Same with his brothers - one day they decided they were done, and that was it. A couple of days of helping them with their clothing, and then they closed the bathroom door and were on their own.

I'm not sure that would work with a developmentally delayed child though - so it might be worth giving the method a try?

I haven't tried the one day method, but my 3-year-old potty trained within one week. The key is to wait until they are ready. For my son, that meant waiting until he was noticeably uncomfortable in a wet/dirty diaper. It was frustrating having to wait until he was three to start PT, but so much easier since he understood what was going on! Good luck.

Shavon,

I am cracking up! Your story is almost exactly like mine. 18 years ago, I bought my son some Mickey Mouse Boxers, and it took him getting Mickey wet one time to break him from accidents.

There was a book Toilet Training In Less Than A Day by Azrin and Fox. There was also a companion book for toilet training children with Down's Syndrome that might work for developmentally delayed children. I had some friends who used this method and it worked -- but they had girls.

My oldest and youngest were a breeze to train, but my middle child, a boy was a challenge. I had heard about Dr. Phil's method and decided to try it. I ordered the anatomically correct doll online. My son named him Buddy. After Buddy went on the potty we had the big party. Cupcakes, party hats, noise makers....I even took pictures of Buddy at his party. The next day my son was potty trained and we had another party. There was some financial investment, but well worth the end result! Good luck~

Wow. I do not think there is any possible way that my son would have trained in a day. We had the potty Elmo, we did the rewards, we did the fluids and the practicing.....it still took a long time. He wasn't day trained until age 3, and not night trained until 4.5.
