Finding out if someone you know is in care?
This is inspired by the other post "I Made The Call". My sister knows my husband and I are going through our home study (in fact she's my family reference). She drove a school bus for 5 years, and now she drives a daycare bus. She has 4 children, 2 in high school and 2 in elementary school.
i spoke with her on the phone yesterday, and she said one of her former coworkers (school bus drivers) told her that three children my sister knew well had been taken into custody about a week previous. The father is an alcoholic who has been unemployed for years, and allegedly on the girl's 13th birthday, he beat all of the children. The other 2 are boys in high school. My sister has taken these kids under her wing for a couple of years, taking them shopping and such. She is very interested in being their foster parent if they are in need of foster care. They have some relatives out of state. i advised she call the county worker and tell her that if these children are, in fact, in custody, that they can call her if they need anything, like a foster home. Perhaps this was wrong? Is there a better suggestion? |

I think it depends on where you live. Someone told me awhile ago(on here) that they were able to confirm that a relative was in care but weren't told anything else until they were licensed.

I know in our case our daughter (who is our niece) was in care in another state however they wouldn't tell us anything at all until we were licensed as foster parents here.
You can always call the CW and let her/him know that this person is interested if a foster home is needed for the kids. I think that's about all you can do at this point.

Hmmm...I didn't know that. I didn't ask if she was in care, because I assumed they wouldn't be able to tell me...I'll call intake tomorrow and see if they can tell me if she is in care. Doubt it, but wouldn't hurt to ask...

When we found out our daughter was in care it was thru another relative whom was called by them. We had no information as to who had called this relative but my husband was able to track down the SW via a detective at the police department in the city where she was taken into foster care at. In order to speak to the SW they required a background check from him over the phone first and then he was allowed to speak to them. They could only say who was over the case. Then he called that SW up and got the ball rolling to move her here. As far as the details of the case, all they could tell him was the reason for removal in general terms. In order to review her entire CPS file we were required to become licensed foster parents first and they needed our license there.

I did pretty much that to get my foster son. Of course I "knew" he was in care, because I was his teacher, and they have to tell us ....but I sent an email to the social worker saying that I was interested in being his foster parent if they needed to move him 'for any reason'. Turns out they knew they'd be going for TPR, and also that the current foster parent wasn't intersted in keeping him for any length of time.
