respite only

Hi - I was just wondering is it okay to go into foster care with the hope of only providing respite care and not long term care or do you have to be open to anything?

In Texas you can chose to do just respite care and you can choose an age range you're willing to take also.

It is definately okay to say you want to do respite only.

It is great to do respite only and much appreciated by other foster parents. It is nice to build up a relationship with someone willing to do respite so the child feels like they are getting treat to visit a special friend. Regular foster homes are usually full and don't like to commit to a visit weeks in advance because they might get a new placement.

that's how we planned to start to get our feet wet. we agreed to take in an 8 and 9 year old for one month......nearly 6 years later...they're still here...and mine. lol. so....starting as respite is fine, just be open to what may come of it. lol!

Right now I am listed as respite only.....

So at least in my state you can specify that is all you want to do.
