Close Call

This morning I picked up our Fgirls from their BP visit. My 10yo DD was putting one of the babies (9months old) in her car seat and I was putting in her twin. My DD says that their is something red in the baby's mouth. I stuck my finger in her mouth and didn't get anything - the baby started coughing and I dug a little deeper and pulled out a bingo chip a little bigger than a dime. I made sure the baby was ok and brought it into the agency and ended up giving it to our CWs supervisor.

I was so upset just thinking about what could have happened. I need to call our CW tomorrow and my heart wants to yell and scream at everyone that this could have happened (I won't though). Maybe I'm hypervigilant - I don't let any of the kids play with anything small like that on the first floor with crawling babies around.

Am I making too big a deal of this?

No, it's a big deal if it was the bparents' home.

If it was a room social services uses for visits, bparent may not have seen the toy on the floor if it was small-another family with older children may have been using the room before your foster children came for their visit.

Granted, bmother should have watched carefully, but babies are very quick, and if there was more than one child present--

So glad the baby is safe, she is very lucky to have you!

If the visit was a the DHS center or a visit center, the visit supervisor should (in our area is) be responsible for making sure the room is safe for babies and toddlers before the visit.

Granted, each family is required to clean up after their children, but the visit supervisor should do a check after the family has left to make sure no small objects are left in reach of a young child.

Kudos to your dd for noticing that the baby had something in its mouth. Kudos to you for getting it out before the baby choked. I would email the cw and your certifier about the incident.

Yes - it was at our agency. The funny thing is that the birth parents were out smoking keeping us waiting inside and my DD and I picked up a few pieces of little Lego! My DH feels that both the agency and birth parents fell short here and what would have happened had something awful happen to the baby? Alot of heads would be rolling.

Here, they really don't want us (FP's) doing anything to facilitate the visit except to bring the kids! We aren't to pick up for the Bio's, bring stuff for visits, nada!! It is the liability of the dept itself to make sure that the children are safe.

Kudos to your DD for noticing and for your quick actions in keeping baby safe and well. Sometimes we just cant be vigalent enough!!!

God Bless!

New Info

I found out today that Biomom was laying on the couch in the visit room presumably asleep leaving biodad to watch all 3 girls (under 2). I've also heard them say that as long as they make the weekly visits and attend parenting classes they will get their girls back. I hope that won't be the case.
