Can they deny you b/c of the meds you take?

So we already adopted through this county. We were going to go ahead and get recertified; one b/c we can then watch our friend's baby and two IF the right child was to come along we would go for it. We just moved about 2 mths ago; I go in for my health form to be filled out and give the run down of my meds. I have been on an antidepressant for over 7 years. There is a question on the form about are there any health probs or mental issues that could effect the prospective parents ability to parent??? This doc puts that I suffer from depression, but am doing good on my current meds. She puts my health status as excellent. Now I call the cw who is coming out and all of a sudden me taking these meds are an issue; she will have to review our file and see if we can go forward????? What the heck!!! I have very mild depression, have never wanted to hurt myself or others, and have never seen a therapist. If I recall my old doc, who has since moved, didn't even put depression down on the last health form b/c it is not really an issue; if I don't take the medicine it is like I am PMSing all the time...that is not good for anyone!!! So can they turn us away????

In our training calsses our CW said that taking meds is not a reason to deny foster parent status. Lots of poeple take meds for depression, bi-polar, ADHD and any other assortment of mood diagnosis. Hopefully the CW just wants a little more info about your particular diagnosis so she can sign off on it as not being a factor.

I wouldn't worry too much about having to answer a lot of questions about your mental health. You obviously are well-adjusted and stable. It sucks that you have to deal with them making such a big deal of it, but don't let the extra hassle scare you away.

No big deal.....had been on them before after miscarriage and even saw a counselor with hubby. I don't know WHY the cw would want to concern you over this. Maybe because he/she is new and doesn't know. But I know very few people not on depression meds or who were never on depression meds. So don't sweat it.

sorry a bit long

shy_bear
I feel your pain
We have been back and forth with our agency and my doctors concerning meds.
I am a Disabled Veteran who had been cleared both physically and mentally by my private doctors.
Or so we thought!!
However it seems my agency was handed the wrong information from the Veterans hospital. It has been a
roller coaster ride to say the least. We started the process in Feb and had thought we would of been licensed by now, but the Medical has severely slowed the process down. That being said, All I needed was to have my doctors write a detailed report of all meds, why I'm taking them and state they would not interfere with me caring for foster children.

Hopefully today will be the day they finally acknowledge my doctors letters and we can move on.'
Our Profile has been done since the end of June.
Home study was in April so we are praying we soon will open our home to children in need!!!

We are from PA also NEPA- 20 miles west of the Poconos.

Good luck and the wife and I will be praying for you!!!
