homestudy

Hi
We were told that our homestudy would be done in 2 to 3 weeks that was a month ago. Just wondering how long you all had to wait to get it done. We are in Indiana and are doing foster only. I am going to call again tomorrow and see if there are any updates on it The last time I called I was told we were on the list to get a social worker to do it that he had been working on the list and remembered our name being there. Just anxious to get this process over and get our license. We have been working on this since Jan. Thanks for your input

Actually, it has not taken that long for you. Some people are still waiting after almost a year.

It all depends on the worker that is assigned to do your homestudy. Sorry, I can't be more specific. I would do as you planned - call tomorrow and say that you are just curious as to the timeline. I would recommend getting your workers email address and follow-up with an email that reiterates your phone conversation with them. Thank them for taking the time to talk with you. This way there is a written record of what was said.

Good luck.

Ok a year seems insane. Thanks for the input I appreciate it. I know dealing with the state is going to be one big joy after another I figure this is getting our feet wet.

We were told in November 2007 we would get a call in a week. Our first homestudy visit was March 28th 2008 and our final visit was April 18th 2008.

We began the process in Sept. 07. We originally expected to be approved by mid-November. One thing after the other happened ( changes in laws, fingerprints unreadable, etc. ). We just were approved as of April 30, 2008. I would take the approach of staying on top of the sw, without nagging them. You don't want to fall off of the radar screen, but don't want to annoy them either. I have taken the whole delay as part of the bigger picture of what is meant to be in our lives and family. In order for you to be matched with the right child, it has to be the right time. Don't worry. It will be done before you know it!

For our county foster license we were done in 45 days. That was from orientation to license. (We already had our cpr cards)

Now, state adoption homestudy, that's a HUGE sore topic for me right now.

We went to orientation in october of 2006!! SW sat at our kitchen table in November of 06 to start and has not been back to our house since August of 2007 with promise after promise she will finish our homestudy. Well it May of 2008 and we're still waiting!!!!!

good thing the county has kept us busy with babies or i might've gone postal with my state sw sooner!!!! LOL

I did call them today and was told we were assigned a case worker yesterday. He (the supervisor) said she should be calling us this week. I told him we are on vacation in 2 weeks and I'd love to get this done while we are both here since my husband and I work opposite shifts that we we don't have to miss work and he said definetly a good idea and if we don't hear from her to call him back middle of next week so we can get it scheduled. They are with Lutheran children services the state has them do the paperwork gathering and the homestudies for them. I'm sure since we have no idea what they are looking for that they will have to come out a second time to make certain we fix whatever they don't like. I was told after they get our homestudy approved the state has 30 days to get our license typed up and sent out to us. I'm just hoping we are licensed by the end of summer. We are willing to take up to 3 children siblings are fine ages 6 and under. I just have a feeling since we are good for that many they will keep us on the back burner until they get a sibling group since they are harder to place.
Thanks for the help and the answers

We started our homestudy in December of 05' and finished it June 06'. We did have to call the supervisor to see what was going on. In the end we got twins(what both of us always wanted). I believe it took so long because god had a plan for these babies to come into our lives.

We got the call today. Caseworker is coming this sunday at 2. Now I'm very nervous. I know it will be fine but can't help it. I have no idea what they are going to be looking for no one has given us much info on it. She did say she needs to talk to my 2 kids (ages 13 and 18). They are nervous wondering what she is going to ask them. I'll be cleaning all day saturday instead of doing my planned do nothing day. It will be worth it though to get it finally over with. Any suggestions on what they will look for and what they will ask my kids?

They will look to make sure you have at least one working bathroom, you have space for foster kids, that your house meets safety requirements. They didn't inspect my house for dust bunnies or perfectness. They will talk to your children about what they think about your home becoming a foster home, if they want to do this, the type of kids, are they willing to share their toys, etc. They'll talk to you about the type of children you will be willing to take for placements, why you are doing this, do you have a support network, how will you handle day care or working, etc. Just remember they are there b/c they want to approve you... just be honest and answer their questions to the best of your ability (and that applies to your children as well).

Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes!

They interviewed all of my kids. They asked them what they like to do for fun, ect. They also wanted to know how they felt about fostering and told them what foster care was all about. They asked all of my kids if they perferred a boy or girl and what ages they would want. All of my kids had different answers so in the end it didn't matter. They still call about kids out of my preferred age group!

Homestudy went well today. She said she will go back and type up a 10-11 page report turn that into her supervisor who will read it and if he has no questions for her about it then it will go on to the state. So hopefully soon we will be licensed and good to go. Thanks for all the well wishes.
