Here's my useless reply since I'm Canadian ;-) When we travelled to the states, we were told to pay any medical expenses out of pocket and then submit receipts when we got home. I don't think YOU should have to buy travel insurance, since isn't it the state's job to cover medical care for a foster child? But I know our health systems are very different.

When I went out of town with my son, at the time fs, the sw told us that his medicaid would not cover him and that any medical emergency would be our responsability. I dont know if it was that county or our state. He is the only fc we have taken on a trip, all our fc we had to leave in respite care.

nanab, you will need to check with your caseworker. I know I had to get special permission to take our foster to adopt kids to Oregon (a three hour drive) to visit my family. I am not 100% sure, but I don't think you can take foster kids outside the country.

We were told to give county worker and social worker enough time to get birth certificate out of lock box and to get judge to ok it. You have to get the child a passport and the GAL and county worker ask judge to sign off on permission.
Haven't had to do it, but they made it seem like it was possible. I know for going across state lines, all I have to do is provide the county worker where we are going, for how long, where we are staying, emergency numbers, etc and she passes it along to GAL.

We were told we should be able to take our fk to visit my husbands family in Central America. We had written permission from both bp and applied for and received a passport with the blessing of the cw and the agency. After all of this, the GAL and the attorney for the state both said no and they were not able to go. I wish they had told us that before we paid for the passports. It cost us a fortune for nothing. We were led to believe by the people involved that it was not a problem and would definitely happen and then it did not. Just make sure you get the judges permission before you invest any money, at least that is my advice. Good luck.

I know things have changed recently but...we were living in AZ in the middle of adopting our MA fd when we decided to go to Mexico. We asked the sw in MA for permission, got the letter, went on our trip and at NO time did anyone even ask! Another time, in '99 we took her from MA to AZ with permission from sw. BF had a fit, but he was told he had no say. Again, we bought her a plane ticket, nobody asked anything. Nowadays I guess things are different and it depends where you are going...

We were told that if the goal of our foster children had been changed to adoption before our trip to visit my husband's family this past summer that we would have been able to take them. At that time, however, the goal was still reunification so that is why they were not allowed to go.

we are going to adopt our fson, his social worker has no problem with him going.just not sure if she has had any of her kids go before, and knows what we might need.we would hate to get to the airport and be told we needed documments that we dont have.so we are really concerned about weather medicaid is all he needs in the uk,or if he needs traverlers insurance for medical .also, some people say they had to have a judge sign a court order giving them permission.so just ned to be sure we dont need that.thanks,
