It starts at the time of placement.

Just a bit of advise. Make sure your boss is aware of what you are doing now and that youmay need time off for a future placement. My boss knew I was a foster parent but when I took in a new born and asked for time off I was fired. But in a unemployment hearing he stated that he has FMLA also. Good luck

Yes, if you like your job or value it or hope to stay happy there when you return, please talk to your boss as early as possible about the possibility of needing time off. When we got our 2.5 year old I took only 3 weeks FMLA. Now we have a newborn out of the blue so I took 9 weeks. Both times I went to my boss first because she has been supportive and I wanted her to know I am looking forward to returning to work.
It's just a nice gesture and when you apply for FMLA they'll tell you "Go tell your boss now that you have a claim in..." Just do it as soon as you know it's a possibility. |

I am a teacher and everyone knows that we foster children where I work. Last year I had to take off an entire month after surgery BUT>>>>> I have only used FMLA for a couple days here and there. I regularly take sick time to take kids to appointments though and I never feel gulty about it. I just do it.
I have never been hassled about it. But, if I received children we are going to adopt, I would use the FMLA to my full advantage. I know the importance of a consistent teacher for children though. I teach 7th grade resource. Have any other teachers or people tha work with children had a hard time getting the time off? |
