I admit, I thank God that things are going well enough that bad grammar can actually BE a concern to me. I have tried modeling good grammar...didn't do much. I try correcting him...it seems to have helped some but I can't correct EVERY thing he says wrong. The school is working on an IEP for him to help him with not just his grammar but his ability to formulate his thoughts into sentences well. He's actually a smart kid. He is pretty much tops in math in his class and does well at reading too - he is tackling Harry Potter now in 2nd grade and while it is a challenge to him, he is not backing down.
Would grammar workbooks be of any help? His vocabulary is somewhat spotty too - he knows some big words and then misses out on understanding some smaller ones. I wonder if this is somehow related too - I got him some gloves with a spider web print on the palms and it took him a couple of minutes before he realized that to put the gloves on right, he'd have to switch to putting the first one the other hand. And I got him a reversible coat today - he had to think about what he needed to do to wear it with the other side out. I tend to let him tackle these things without help. He's a very gifted artist and can make all kinds of creations with Legos etc - certain spatial relations skills just seem to elude him! Sorry for blathering - I just want to help him reach his potential and to sound as smart as he is.

It drives my DH crazy. "Me want outside." "Her need that." AAAHHH!!! My kids have an hour of speech at school and an hour of private speech and after 5 months we are really seeing a difference. I was surpeised at how much it helped.
We were told to say it correctly after they say it wrong and then move on to answer them. If they are pronouncing it wrong, have them try to do it right in a fun way. Do not do it in front of others or in public but encourage them to try on their own. My kids are pretty severe and a couple are hard to understand and one of my 4 yr olds I find myself smiling alot b/c I have no idea what she is saying. SHe thinks I have the problem not her. SHe is too cute and she tries to talk slow to me like I am the child. I always make sure to end any efforts on a positive note and praise them. |
