diabetes qualifying?
Good morning all! Can anyone tell me if our Type 1 diabetic foster son should qualify for a special boarding rate? He is insulin dependent and that requires us to look after his diet and dosages more stringently. I have put in the question to his caseworker though I am sure they will debate this notion. Any help?

I would say yes, he will qualify. Diabetes is a serious disease and does need to be monitored. My dh is type 2 and on a strict diet and testing schedule. The state should have a state nurse evaluate him for a change in subsidy. It's also helpful to have a note from his doctor regarding his condition and the amount of extra time you have to put in as a parent.

I would also investigate the idea of putting him on an insulin pump. I'm not sure if medicade will pay for it but it would make your life and his better and will help you keep his sugars under control. Maybe his endocrinologist could help!

Not all states have special rates. In some states you have to qualify as a "medical home" to get special rates. I know that FL is one. I've had some seriously ill children - a FAS, a HIV+, premie, etc and not received an extra dime. The medicaid pays all the expenses but I don't even get mileage for dr visits. (I do track it all and deduct the charitable expenses on my taxes tho')
Good luck in your state.
