Just heard about a law change here that should really help!

For the first time in my life, I feel like I might actually be in the RIGHT place at the right time, LOL. Here in Alberta, up until now, there has been a "supports for permanency program" whereby parents who are adopting or assuming private guardianship could still recieve the daily maintenance rate IF their gross family income was under $60,000 a year. It wasn't pro-rated, either - if you were a penny over, you got nothing. One result of this is that fewer people have been opting for PG or adoption, since long term foster care would better meet their financial needs. Even I was slightly in panic mode wondering how much harder it was going to be to feed and clothe this kid, pay school fees, afford a counsellor etc. after we move for PG. Well, to encourage more permanency the governemnt has just announced that they are removing the $60,000 cap - so it looks like we'll be eligible for the base rate after all! That's $25.79 per day, plus some money for counselling. Nice to see a POSITIVE move made by Children's Services!

That's great! The total opposite of here... here the subsidies are being cut.

I think it is wonderful that they recognize that continuing subsidies would help more children find permanence!!

Thats wonderful news for you all. It's that way here in calif where I live, even after you adopt you still recieve your fund's. You keep the same amout you were given for fostering even if it's above the reg amount, that way ppl wont go long term, but adopt or get the gaurdianship...I'm glad to here more place's are doing what's right for the kids and still helping the family's.
