Foster Parent Class
What are some reasons ppl aren't certified after the foster parenting classes? We are start our classes on the 27th and I am just scared to death something will happen and we won't get our cert.
We have had a home inspection and there were a few things we were told we needed to do - 5lb fire extinguisher (not a 3), lock all meds, list of emergency phone numbers, and emergency evacuation maps in every room. We now have that done... Is there anything I need to know...

I guess there COULD be a reason to be denied after the class, but I don't see what it would be. (unless you acted really weird LOL) Our class was small and nice. We learned alot. Seems you are on the right track...good luck with the classes!

Think of it this way.....just because you take a college class doesn't mean that you will pass this class. Having said this.....
I truly don't believe that you will be denied your license because of the classes. I think this time just gives you the opportunity to learn and to make sure that foster parenting is really what you want to do. You will learn a lot in these classes. It's if you can't pass the other things that you have to do: background checks, physicals and etc. As for the home inspections, I have found that you are always checked twice before ever getting licensed. The first time is for them to tell you what you need to do - the second time is for them to make sure that you have done it. Good luck. Christina |

Ok, that makes sense. When they did our first home inspection, we were told to "fix" some things. When they came back we had done these things and everything was fine. Background checks, physicals, etc have been completed and everything is ok.
I've just heard stories about ppl not passing the class... but what you have sd makes sense. Thank you

I am afraid that at this point is when you will learn more patience than you ever have. I have heard that even after all the checks and all the classes it will probably take a couple months. Personaly it took us a year and a half. But we were in military housing and looking to buy a house and they were waiting for us to do that before we got the final okay. So we were in unusual circomstance(sp?). Be patient and have faith that you have done all you can do. That is all anyone can ask. Good luck.

The way classes were explained to US was that they were mainly for the prospective foster parents to see what they were getting into. The only way that they'd use the classes to screen US was if someone really had some persistent wrong ideas, or said a lot of inappropriate stuff. I know there was one guy at OUR class who was applying to adopt the child of an acquaintance, and he continually referred to the birth mother as 'crack whore'. he was told several times that was NOT appropriate, but he still passed the CLASS. Now, I'd like to see if he passed the home study!
ps - I just got a call this week that MY home study is finally done -and I need to make an appointment to review and sign it. Pretty kooky since I've had A. for 6 months...I wonder if I passed? ;-) |

Stevenstwin makes me laugh... there was a guy in our class that was very into the macho "it's my house-iot's my way" thing... they had 2 kids already and they homeschooled and spanked when needed. It was hard to convince him WHY you can't spank foster kids. He came around and they are now wonderful FP's!

What takes so long after the class has been finished? Is the home study? We've finished and passed ours - we got started early...
