Foster Child

How long does it usually take to get a foster child? The child that I'm trying to get is my cousin and the lady told me it would take 3 months before I get him. I just wanted to know if this is true and if there was anything I could do to speed the process up.

One of my foster daughters was given to her great grandma after 25 days. So I guess it depends on how quickly they do your background checks and homestudies.

I guess it depends on where you are, but we were told the same thing, and it turned out not to be true. I was trying to get a teenage student of mine, and I was told it would be a good three months to complete homestudies, 24 hours of foster care training, etc. Then I found out that I could apply through "kinship" care, and all I needed was a police check and Child Welfare clearance. All the other stuff could be done AFTER his placement. I had him withing 2 weeks.

How did you do your background check? Did you just go to the police station by yourself?

If you are a relative you should only have to contact the childs social worker and they should help you out from there. It took us 3 weeks to get our little one, but it could have been done in two. If you are not getting a response from the social worker start going up the food chain and calling supervisors.
