Question ANOTHER tax question

For six months now we have been begging our SW for our f-daughters SSN. Now here we are 10 days til tax day and there is still no number. SW says the dept. requested it but it still hasn't come in. Seems to me someone dropped the ball. Meahwhile, that SSN means the difference between owing $31 and a $1400 refund. What do I do?!? Anyone run into this before? (BTW- she was born in 2005 and we've had her since, so the SSN was being issued for the first time)

I just went down to the local SS office and handed them my foster care I.D. and told them what I needed. I had it within 2 minutes.

If you have an office near you and any of the placement papers that you are the foster mother they should give it to you no problem...at least it wasn't for me.

Good luck!

I checked; I would need adoption papers in order to obtain the number (at least according to the person I spoke to at the 800#). She also told me that it should only take 2 weeks to get the #, so no excuses for the SW.

Exact same problem here

We requested our little ones ssn in OCTOBER and still don't have it. Our case worker and I even went down to the ss office with the babies birth certificate and they would not give it to us. We just filed an extension so we will have an extra 6 months to file. Hopefully they will be able to get it to us by then.

We are trying to file for a adoption identification number in the meantime (irs.gov). But they don't normally issue them for foster care, only for adoptive placements. Our little one is officially an adoptive placement now, so it's worth a try.

All I can say is good luck!

We got our foster daughter's number with a letter from DHS saying she was in our care.
They mailed it to our home.

Whenever we get a new placement, I always request a letter stating the child is on our care and that we can seek medical treatment if needed as well as can travel with the child.

Could you get it from the doctor's office???
Maybe with written permission from the CW.

I was in this same boat until 10 days ago. I constantly called the cw (no answer for over 1 month) and finally found a person at our local DHS office who's job it is to get birth certificates and SSN for the kids.

She told me to put 'applied for' or 'pending' in the space for the number, but to also verify this with the IRS.

When I called the IRS I was told that the only two options I had were 1) file without the child on the return and wait until the SSN was issued and then file an ammended return or 2) file without the child - period.

The lady at our local DHS office got 75 new birth certificates in 1 day delivered to her!!! She then had to get SSN for each of them. This was only 2 weeks ago.

I would recommend seeing if there is 1 person at your local DHS office who is in charge of getting the SSN (generally not the cw) and contact them. They can usually expidite getting the number for you.

Good luck.

Blessings,
Lynda
