Venting: Birth Certificate Required
So the soccer registration person would not let us sign up our foster children for soccer because we do not have a birth certificate. We found out the name of the local director and contacted her, and they now will accept our children if we provide them with copies of the placement letter and a letter from SW verifying birthdates. So it will all work out. But it's not like we aren't busy enough with the everyday special demands of foster children to have to jump through extra hoops. This wasn't a probelm with Baseball, and it's not like our kids are huge monsters for there age. I feel sorry for the kids/parents who don't persist... though people who don't persist probably don't make it to the foster parent ranks anyways. Do they?

Wow, around here, fp's can't sign children up for things like that because it required signing a release stating that you won't hold the baseball/soccer league liable if the child gets hurt. You're lucky if they let you sign!

We also signed up our fs for t-ball and told them our situation, no birth certificate.... but they said a letter from a sw would be good or anything we had that had his birthdate on it.
Not sure how it's going to be when I register him for kinder. We have a birth certificate (we got it later on) but it's not a certified copy, just a copy of it.... maybe that and the letter that gives persmission to seek medical attn will be good enough....

I always ask for a copy of the birth certificates and social security numbers for new placements. I also make sure and get a letter from sw stating that we are the foster parents and allowed to seek treatment if needed.
Anything that requires a parent/guardian signature gets the social worker's signature.

Its kinda odd, I never thought of this, I put my df in cross country, to verfiy the age the couch just got somthing from the school. He was very nice about it and just said, "I'll take care of it". Its strange, they want us to treat them as our own, then don't give us all nessary to do it.

We are not allowed to get the child's social security cards or birth certificates UNLESS we have adopted them. We have their ss# on their insurance cards and their placement letters, but that is it.
I live in TN. |

yanknrebel, You should be allowed to get the Social Security number esp. since you can claim foster children as dependents on taxes. We were able to claim 2 of our fc this year according to the IRS guidelines.
We also were able to get a BC from the SW/county so that we could take our fs on a couple of cruises with us. We live in MN.

With all of our placements, that's 4, they never gave us their bc b/c they didn't have it.... they had to order and some of the kids weren't born locally... But I have gotten fs soc sec # and bc now and shot record... my fd, I have nothing but the letter for medical treatment... they give us that immediately when we pick up the children. Thank goodness!

This is what I love about this board. Never having been a mom before, I never would have even thought to ask for their birth certificate or SS card so that they can get into activities.
I had no idea they would ask you for such information!! Another good thing to add to my pre-placement checklist. |

The newirs laws for this year state the foster child/ren can be in your home for 6 months and you can file. They have some system in place in case two or more parties try to clam the children.
I believe natural parents get priority, and then it goes by time in your home. http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/article...child_def_2005 Here is a link to the irs site Also, if I hadn't asked, they wouldn't have found out that little D doesn't even have a SS #. I will be bringing the paperwork in soon, so that I know it gets done.

Just a BC note...
My daughter was required to have this for softball.. I think it is so that you dont sign up an older kid in a younger league... for advantage... or vice versa.. try to sign up a younger kid into an older league because the parent thinks they are ready... Different leagues insurance may be different... I agree... though... even as a non-foster ( ) it is irritating! |

We always request a copy of Birth certificate and SS card whe a child is placed with us, but they usaully do not have one. So we go through the hoops to obtain them. We keep a file for each child where we keep all these items along with Grade card and other information which will be important should they ever leave us and go to another home. You would think that all of these things would be in their records already but unfortanetly the usually aren't.

here, soccer requires orginial birth record and
other sports don't if you play rec. league, competivite league is very strict about everything....here SW must sign child up for school and camp and day care.....
Most fc don't get to go on out of state field trips and all kinds of werid things happen over vacation issues and the like... taxes, actually if the child isn't with you on permanent foster care or an adoptive placement, you really can't claim them on taxes especially if it is one of those very werid situations where birth parents are paying child support, because good ole b-p can claim them and in the dispute they will win....but since most b-ps aren't the most up standing people and many foster parents around here do claim their foster children....you can always claim any costs above your board rate as a donation to social services in you city (which it is) and if you paid child care that was not reimbursed you could claim that and would need child's SS# for that.... we usually get a COPY of birth record, not the orginal and a copy of the ss# that you need for WIC and such, and you can get WIC on these kids in foster care |
