Fostering and Homeschooling
Hi. I was wondering if anyone here homeschools their bio or adopted children and are foster parents. (I know we can not homeschool foster children.) I was wondering if you had any advice on how to do both. I homeschool my two bio sons, 5th and 2nd grade. We should be licensed in the next few weeks to foster 0-8 year olds.
Thanks for any advice you may have. |

How we handle it
We're in our fifth year of homeschooling, and we started foster care 16 months ago. We have two fs's that go to preschool, one will start kindergarten in the fall. We cannot homeschool foster children, unless we would get the permission of the judge. (Indiana) I do have a friend that fosters and homeschools and she had a fs that just had major difficulties in school and she did get permission to homeschool him. For us it's not a big issue because the fc are all several years younger than my bio. children. So they think it's normal to go to school and the older ones stay home. I think it would be more difficult if they were the same age. For now it works for us. Not that I wouldn't love to homeschool all of them, but...

In our state (NJ) you have to have permission from a judge to homeschool foster children between the ages of 6 and 16. Before age 6 you can homeschool, if your cwer is supportive of it. Our son Raj is homeschooled and was when he was a foster child. Our son Om was in preschool as a fosterchild (as per his cwers wishes) and is now partially homeschooled (long story).
The child's cwer will ultimately play an important role in whether or not you can homeschool. At least that's what our situation has been.

Here in Wy you have to get the Judge to agree to it and then you can do it.
