wood stove/fireplace safety

Hi there,

We are in the middle of our AE classes and almost finished with the application. The Health Inspector has already been by. We passed. He told us that we would need to get a gate or protection for the woodstove, which makes sense, of course. We are looking for children under 10 years of age. The only safety hearthgate I can find seems to be about $180. I am looking to see if anyone has done anything besides this and what that might be. If we have to get the $180 gate, we will but if there are other alternatives, i'd love to hear them! I am waiting for my fire inspection to be scheduled. Thanks!

We had the same exact thing happen to us. We have a free standing gas fireplace in the middle of our living room. Our inspector told us to build one. It was really easy to do. All you need is to block the front and 2 sides. My husband went to Home Depot, picked up some pine wood. Built it in 3 sections and nailed it together. Each section has a top, middle peice and bottom and 2 sides. Then you butt nail the 3 peices together and Walla....you have a protective barrier. Ours passed. THey just want something there that shows the child it is hot and to stay away. We are adopting a 7 year old boy and we still have to have ours in place. So it's really easy and I thnk it cost us like $50. And it looks nice when made from pine. You can stain it or keep it natural. There are several different types of wood you can use too. We used Pine becuase it is light and smells good. Matches our floors too.

Is it in a room you use regularly? Our fireplace is in our formal living room. We have a baby gate blocking entrance to that room to keep little feet away. That being said, we haven't had our homestudy so I don't know whether we'll have to do even more.
