custody of adult foster children
When a foster child turns 18, are they immediately released from foster care?
And also, if the child chooses not to communicate with the former foster family after they leave, is there any way the family can be informed on how they're doing or they're whereabouts? Thanks, Emily |

It is usually 18, although it can be pushed to 21 in some cases. If the child is discharged as an adult, I imagine it would be up to them to remain in touch.

The judge usually decides if a foster child can be released at 18.
Most do from what I've seen. It is then up to that child./adult to decide who he wishes to communicate with. No one will keep track of him once he is released. |

Here, in KY, a foster child who is 18 can choose to be voluntarily recommited to the cabinet as long as they are still in school/taking college courses, etc. They child (adult) may also choose at any time to end the arrangement and be released from care.
I believe it would be up to the foster child whether or not to maintain contact with the foster family. Once the child is out on his/her own, the case worker wouldn't necessarily have any information on the child's whereabouts or well-being. |
