I have a 3 year old foster son who has a behavior disorder. He has oppositional behavior defaint disorder. The only problem is that I have never had a child that has this order. Can anyone give me any advise on how to correct him when he is being ugly? I have tried time out withhis head on the table. I have tried to do what the therphy told me to do( don't start time out until he cools down) but that never seems to happen. I have tried everything. Does children like this have to have medication or not? I really hate to have children on medication but I am begining to wonder if I am going about this the wrong way. Please help? |

Here are some helpful links that cover ODD, what to do with a child who has ODD, etc...
http://childparenting.about.com/cs/disorders/a/odd.htm http://www.klis.com/chandler/pamphle...cdpamphlet.htm http://www.aacap.org/publications/fa...878339639.html http://www.familyvillage.wisc.edu/lib_odd.htm I hope this is helpful to you. There are also many books available on this disorder that you can purchase via amazon.com or get from your local library. You may also want to search for a yahoo group for other parents going through this with their child. Best of luck to you.

Unfortunately, medications don't help. Three is so young, how's his language understanding? I give my ODD children choices-You can walk to your bed, or I can carry you. You can sit at the table and eat, or not eat. They opose control so giving a choice sometimes helps remove the power struggle.

My foster son has a high I.Q. he talks really well. I know that there were not any structure in the family. He was mainly raised by his 12 year old sister. I do not want to start any mediciation. I was hoping that there are other ways to make him understand that he can not do body harm to his 2 year old sister. He really gets upset when we have to supervise everything. I know that I have a long way to go, but thank you for the help and the support. He also uses bad language that he does not want to stop. I just feel that he is always in trouble for not listening, TIME OUT only goes so far. I really thank all the advice that I can get |
