Help for colicky baby?

Hi,

We just got a newborn placed with us this week - just one week old today! He's an adorable baby but seems to be farily colicky. I haven't really dealt with colic before and am looking for advice!? For the first three nights he only slept about 2 hours, keeping us awake trying to calm him. He was really peaceful during the day, jsut eating and sleeping. Yesterday and today he's had quite a few fretful times and last night he just woke up to eat but didn't seem bothered by colic so we all got some sleep!!!Yeah!

What do you do for colic? Does anything really help/ How long does it last. Any input or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks and have a great day,
Diane

First let me say that my heart DEFINITELY goes out to you! My son had colic for 5 months, and it was ROUND the clock... not the few hours in the night you read about. Everyone under the sun had suggestions for me, and NOTHING worked... we just had to ride it out. However, I will tell you all the things people told us to try (and believe me, we tried them all!)... maybe one of them will work for you:

1) Take him for a ride in the car.
2) Put him in a baby seat or bouncy seat and put him on top of the dryer while it is running.
3) Get a ziploc bag full of warm water and put him bare-bellied on top of your bare belly with the bag of warm water between your bellies.
4) Cradle him tummy to tummy, standing up and holding him close to you, bounce rhythmically up and down.
5) My mother-in-law is into all this homeopathic remedies, and she got this stuff that we put a couple drops into his formula, and it seemed to help more than anything. I wish I could think of it, but I can't right now. The name had "Cat" in it... maybe "Cat's Claw" or something like that.

That's all I can think of for now. I'll post more if they come to me.

Good luck!

Hello,
Are you certain it is colic? You said he was a newborn and you had just gotten him. His restlessness could be any number of things ranging from a new enviornment, formula adjustment, constipation, earache (cousin born with an ear ache that led to tubes..thought it was colic) etc... Or he could just have his days and nights mixed up.
Both of my now grown children had to be placed on prosobee for milk alergies. My grandson is on goodstart which seems to be easier on the digestive system than most formula brands. He is more restful with the good start than he was on enfamil.

Congradulations and blessings,
EL

Try a little baby massage. You can use baby oil or lotion just before bedtime. Start with your right hand on his tummy with your thumb pointing towards his feet. Rotate your hand clockwise and have your left hand ready (thumb towards head) to rotate as well. This helps to push any gas bubbles through his intestines, you may even be able to feel them as you rub his tummy. Clockwise is important because that is the direction that the intestines "flow".

Good luck!

Not to be mean, but never never use baby oil on a baby!! One tiny little but can get in their mouth and they could asperate it and die. If it gets in their lungs they can no longer function.
I am a former nurse and I worked in newborn nursery,NICU and PICU.

vibrating mattress

I've heard of a device that is attached to the matress of your crib that makes it vibrate. In fact, if a doctor writes a prescription for it, it is considered medically reimbursable by most FSA plans. Can't remember the extact name of it, but ask your pediatrician, they may know of it.

Take a good look at when the fussiness occurs. If it immediately after or during a feeding, the formula may be a problem, as may reflux.

Hi,

I've had a couple of sick kids these last few days. I'm thinking of changing baby N's formula. He does get fussy sometimes after eating, acts like he's in some kind of pain, Also gets hiccups a lot.He will often settle down with a pacifier, but you can guess what happens when he spits it out! Thanks again guys.
Diane
