hmmm....

Well, I've been licensed for about a month now, and haven't heard anything. That's not surprising I guess, since I'm only taking ages 0-24 months, but anyway, now I'm considering taking emergency placements and respite care. Who would I call to ask about that? The only person I know to call is my licensing social worker, but I think she only does licensing and I'm already licensed, so would I call someone else? Also I think I remember some of you saying before that you call someone to just remind them that you want a placement, am I remembering that right? Who would you call for that? I'm with the state, by the way, not a private agency.

It is frustrating waiting around, huh? I'm right there with you....been 2 months and 3 calls, but none that worked. (My age group is girls ages 18mo-3). At our agency we have one specific person who is in charge of placements if it is during office hours. If you call and ask to speak with whoever is in charge at the placement desk you should get through to someone who could help you. The only thing I was thinking when you said you may switch to accepting anyone, is that what happens if your "perfect" child comes into care, but you aren't available because you are doing respite or an emergency placement? I wouldn't want you to get tied up in those type placements and miss the right child for you. Just my thoughts. However, how many children are you willing to accept? If several then this wouldn't really apply anyway. Good luck!! I hope you get a call soon!! I know how hard it is to wait around. ![]() Lisa |

We had been waiting once licensed as well, until I started calling the placement worker to "remind " her that we are here and "readily available"...after calling her twice, we got a call the morning after the second phone call for a 12 and a half month old little girl, and her newborn brother who we picked up from the hospital....That was 2 months ago, and we couldn't be happier...We are in the fost-adopt program, and we were open to male or female, 0-5, any race, and minor medical issues, and we are licensed for up to 3 children...These children are the light of our lives, and they are thriving! The only medical problem so far is our fd has asthma, and is on a nebulizer twice a day, (or if needed more during an asthma attack)... and she has chronic constipation for which she takes Maltsupex, and mineral oil twice a day..They were both cocaine exposed, and there was no prenatal care for either of them....I feel that the main reason we were blessed with these 2, is because we were fresh in her mind when she was called about these 2 wonderful babies... ![]() |

Your agency may have a Foster/Adoption Home Finding Unit, that's who places the children for us. We're certified for 0-7, either race, but we're a foster/adopt house and they like to place the legal at risk kids here, so we don't get a lot of calls. If we were just fostering, we'd always have kids. Also. consider the size of the area where you live. My county is small, and we have a LOT of foster/adopt homes. We can also only take two children. A lot of bigger sibling groups come in and we aren't even eligible. Keep at it and be persistant and good luck!

Britalyn, it is sometimes difficult for newly-licensed foster parents to get placements, because Social Services prefers to work with people they know. As time goes by, however, there will be heavy loads, people quit, etc., and you will move up the ladder. You might want to be more flexible in choosing your age groups. It is NOT true that younger chldren are easier than older children. Some people are having major problems with pre-schoolers, and others have teen-agers who are wonderful. Try calling your licensing worker. If she is the wrong person, she'll steer you to the right one.
