Important Interstate adoption question

We are looking at adopting an older child from another state through straight adoption. We had a failed international adoption (after a year and half in process and us meeting the child the birthmother decided she wanted the child back ) and need to get an updated domestic homestudy. Does anyone know if we need to go through our states classes and become licensed in order to adopt an older child from another state's foster care system. We want to make sure we are doing this the right way. We have already had contact with the other states authorities and they are looking for a child for us right now.

thanks so much for any instruction and insight we are most grateful!

Karen

I'm not sure I'll be much help because we're at the very beginning of our process. My twins' birthmom had two children removed by her state a little over a year ago. Because she's made no progress on her case plan, we were contacted about adopting the children (interstate). We are going through our state's foster care licensing and adoption home study process in order to receive these children, and PRIDE classes are required. Basically, the home state contracts with our state to provide services for the children until such time as the adoption is finalized. In our case, the kids will be in our home at least six months before we can finalize, so they will technically be foster children until that time.

Good luck!

We're in Washington and it's being handled through the Dept of Social & Health Services.

You might check with your county. We are trying to adopt from foster care and our agency wont work out of state. We were told that we need to get our county to request our homestudy and we need to sign a release. From there the county may require an update to the HS but will use the complied info indoing so.
