Family Trees with Adoption

I know that I am WAY ahead of the game here, but it occurred to me as I was driving to work that someday Chubbs will likely have to a family tree in school. I don't plan to keep the fact that he is adopted from him, but also, I am a single mom, so have no "dad" for him. So, for those who have BTDT, how did you handle the family tree assignments.

Here's a good link to a PDF that talks about tricky assignments in school:

One idea is to use your childs birth family as the roots of the tree and then his adopted family as the tree.

When I assign a family tree project, I always give the option of using celebrities or their friends as their family- granted my assignments are for language acquisition, not history.
You can talk about being "grafted" into the family. This is used a lot in horticulture, but also is used in religious circles as well. The connection is made between two different plants by splicing them together and they actually grow into one another and become one plant.
These are just some little ideas- find something that you like and use it. It can also be used as an opportunity to share and educate about adoption.

For what it's worth, my daughter is in 6th grade and has never been asked to do a family tree. But, families are so varied these days that I think anything goes. If we were doing one today, I'd probably just make his biological mom another branch off of him (we don't know about dad). He has two brothers so they would be another branch from biological mom. I'm also single so I'd be a branch and from me would be all his extended family.

6 Year old Max - Foster/Adopt - Adoption Finalized 12/09
