Change Your Adopted Child's Ss#!

Please everyone change their adopted child's ss# when you have the chance after adoption. I knew when I went with our adoption decree & birth certificates to the social security office that I should request their numbers be changed also but DCS told me there was no need to do that. Well, 2 years later and we went to have our taxes filed this year with our accountant and it was rejected through efiling because two of our dependents ss#'s had already been used. I talked to the IRS today and found out that what I was afraid of happened. The birthparents used their numbers to claim them as dependents this year. So now we have to paper file and send in birth certificates, ss cards, & adoption decree to prove they are ours before we will receive our refund. We were also told to fild another form which is a fraud form. Of course since the bp's are here illegally I'm sure they are not using their real names to file. So please think twice and change the numbers. I wish now I would have changed numbers & names.

We changed dd's SS number after her adoption. I know her bio family had used their ss numbers before and didn't want to have that worry or that she would have bills there at age 18.

We changed our dd's just because it isn't just the bios who may have the info. What about anyone who is ~less than honest~ from the DCFS office? I'm not saying that anyone is, but I didn't want to take the chance.

This IS a good idea. We changed both our AS ss#s. We were told that sometimes bio parents run up tons of charges and then when they are 18 and trying to get a card of their own, they inherit thousands of dollars of debt! I didn't even think of the tax thing... Where we live, they don't usually change them but my dh works in a state office and he GOT them to change it for him.

I tried to change my children's SS# and the SS administration wouldn't allow me to. They would only allow me to change their name.

Same thing happened to me. I tried and since she was 8 when we adopted her they said since she knows she's adopted they can't change it. So, I'm going back down to the SS office to get her name changed on the number and get a card. At least then her new name will be on the number.

The SS office tried to tell us that we couldn't change the SS when we adopted our second child. We knew this was NOT TRUE so we were firm and asked to speak with a supervisor. The supervisor said, 'Oh, well...yeah, when they are adopted you can.'

If you were told that you can't, double check again. I do think that some relative adoptions might be different, specifically grandparents adopting a grandchild. STILL, push for it as it can be important.

We were told all along that it wasn't a big deal, but we felt that it was because: 1) we never got their original SS cards, so I didn't know who had them (!), and 2) we didn't know who had access to the numbers, if they were being used by other people, and 3) it was a papertrail that led to our home so....

Oh...and if you change the name and not the SS number you'll mess up your IRS, too. We did this because I just forgot (I know, I know!) to change the SS number before we filed one year. We got that taken care of before we filed the next year! LOL

If you are changing the name, Hkolln, just ask for a new number when you go in again. Ask them to document for you and show you the written rules that will NOT allow you to change you Dd's SS number. Knowing that you are adopted doesn't have anything to do with it. That sounds like fiddle-faddle.

I went to the SS office twice to two different people to see if the 2nd one would allow us to change her SS#. They both told me the same thing which was "Because she knows she's adopted we cannot change her number but you can change her name." So I asked for a supervisor and that supervisor told me the same thing. I then proceeded to bring out the domestic violence section where you can get your SS# changed...and this supervisor proceeded to tell me that "domestic violence" ONLY pertains to adults. DUH!

Oh well! I could always go back a 3rd time but I think they know me there now LOL...and the wait was like 2 hrs each time I went! UGH

We haven't changed her name on her SS card yet so when I filed taxes this year I just used her current SS# and her old name. As long as the SS# matches the name you are OK.

And when they change the SS# then the child really has TWO numbers. They do not close out the previous one....

Here's the official web site answer. I still think it is stupid to not issue a new number for an adopted child, even if they know. I don't understand how this would change anything??? Sounds like someone needs to lobby for a tweak to the rules.

And yes, we'd changed the name but not gotten a new card...so we had name/SS number that didn't match when we filed. I'm usually more up on things (Dh even looked at me oddly when this happened!) but it got worked out. Eventually.

The SS office on University is FULL of idiots! I kept mailing them my information for ONE YEAR and they kept mailing it back saying something was missing, even though it was there. I finally made an appointment and went down there, the guy apologied, but it still was a waste of time when could've had it done a year before!

That's not right. Our daughter was 7 yrs. old by the time we finalized the adoption and knew she was being adopted, the social security office gave me no problem. I'm sorry you had such a hard time. I am SO glad they allowed the change for our daughter's sake, extended bio has her birth SS# and have used it in the past.
