Question re: childcare
I have a question. DH and I are just starting this process of foster to adopt and I am wondering if there is a general rule about childcare. Say we'd like to go out one night.... can a foster child be left with my parents for a few hours? Do they need to have all of their clearances and have their home inspected too? Maybe this is a silly question, but wanted to know.

I am pretty sure this depends on your area regulations. I am able to leave my foster children with anyone I would leave my biological children with. Parents, qualified sitter etc., I have heard some areas require background checks or be a licensed child care provider.

You will probably need to find out the rules in your area. In our state, as long as it is for just a couple hours, you can leave them with anyone you would leave your biological children with. But, for more than a few hours and any overnights, the foster kids would have to go to respite or to someone with clearances done.

I agree that it must depend on the state. In my situation, I am only able to leave my foster son with someone who is 18 years old & who has had the proper clearances. It doesn't matter how long it will be for.

Here you have to have the backup babysitter fingerprinted. Once cleared they can watch the child in YOUR home. If they wish to watch them in THEIR home then that particular home needs to be cleared by CPS also. Best way to find out is call the SW and ask her/him.

My support worker said "Use your own judgment" when I asked about babysitting, though she recommended a licensed foster parent for overnight visits. I took that as meaning a few hours in the evening is okay, but regularly leaving a foster child with someone else would not.
So far I've only left N once with my BIL, who also happens to be a trained EMT, and only once I was happy he'd be okay. (We did a "dry run" earlier that week so they'd get to know each other.) |
