Just wondered if anyone else has tried any nutritional supplements for their children? My dd, 7, has bipolar and in addition to her mood stabilizer we tried her on the Omega 3 after reading lots of good stuff about it. The first week she seemed more irritable, but maybe that was just her. The following week she actually went to bed and slept all night! She had been prescribed meds to help her sleep but now we haven't used them in 2 months! Her grades at school also improved and she just tested above grade level in math. Anyone else had luck with this or other supplements for bipolar, autism, adhd, or other conditions? I can't believe she actually likes the gummy things because they taste like stale tuna to me, yuck!

I'll have to give that a try! Do you get it at the pharmacy where the vitimins, etc are?
I'm pretty sure my own adopted son, who will be 8 yrs old this week, has Early Onset Bipolar. I had never heard of it until last year but after reading about it I'm pretty sure that's what it is. Last year I took him to a pychiatrist to find out about treatment but while I was waiting to have the second appointment I tried him on 3 mg of Melatonin because he had such a problem falling asleep at night. He never gave me any problem about going to bed but would just lay there awake for several hours. I don't know if the Melatonin helps smooth out his mood swings or if it's just because he gets a really good night sleep but the change in his behavior was immediate .At first I thought it was just some sort of coincidence but it was the week of halloween and also his birthday and he remained calm throughout both. Generally, either one of those would have sent him off into his manic behavior which would then quickly turn into temper tantrums. When we went back to the doctor he told me to continue with the melatonin. It's been a year since he began the melatonin and it is still working. I'm not saying that he never has temper tantrums but they are not as explosive as they were before. His school work and his behavior at school improved immediately too. He seemed to be able to concentrate better on his work and he began to start reading. Previously, he had had trouble even remembering what each letter sounded like and all of a sudden he was reading . |

Yes, I got them at the pharmacy where the vitamins are. Walmart didn't have them, but we found them at Walgreens. The kind we use is Lil Critters gummy fish because the extract the Omega 3 from algae instead of fish (no risk of mercury). I may try the melatonin for me! I'm a night owl.
