Who pays day care?
Hi everyone. I posted this on another board, but I thought someone here might have some guidance too. I am hoping to go into the foster program with the hope of fostering and possibly adopting an infant (eventually). I am single & work full time, so I would need to find a day care provider. Would DSS pay for that seperately, or would that be included in the monthly allowance? If that amount doesn't cover day care, would I have to pay out of pocket? I don't know if it makes a difference, but I live in Virginia. Thanks everyone!

Daycare
Hi, I believe this differs state to state. I live in California, and am a single working mother who foster/adopted my son when he was 3 months old. He came to live with me in July 2004, and the adoption was final April 2005. The way it worked here was as long as he was a foster child daycare was paid in full separate from his monthly check. However once the adoption was finalized I still received his monthly check, but it was up to me to pay daycare.
I would check with the agency that you plan to foster through (mine was the Santa Clara County) to see whether or not they pay daycare. Hope this helps! |

This does help. Thank you very much! Wow! Your process went really quickly. Congratulations! Do you still foster as well? Thanks again.

Daycare
Actually, I got very, very lucky. I never really did want to foster, my goal was to adopt. My son was the first child that I was offered; they told me from the start that he was a very good candidate for adoption. The mother's rights were terminated a few months later, and there was no father or any relatives who stepped forward.
I thought I would have a hard time adopting an infant as a single, working mother (actually I did not really expect it to happen, I thought I would only be offered older children), but they told me I was matched to him because as a single person with no other children I would be able to give him my undivided love and attention (which I do, and he is spoiled rotten!). He was exposed to drugs during his mother's pregnancy, but seems to have escaped any effects from this. He is a perfectly normal, smart, happy, wonderful toddler! Since I only wanted to adopt and now have my son, I do not foster anymore. |

question about your experience
Hello, we are about to adopt our 18 month old foster child who was also exposed to drugs, but appears he is going to be okay...though much of the research says the problems don't show up until school age. My question is...are you getting adoption support for your child..even though he seems okay? We are filling ou the paperwork for adoption support and have no idea how much $$$ to put down as we don't know what the future problems might be. Any advice is appreciated. We are in WA state.
