Going to sign up...

...to be a Guardian ad litem, that is. I have no experience at all with the foster care system! This is something that I've kind of wanted to do since college, and since I had my own baby, the plight of children is REALLY pulling at me. I want to foster someday but I think right now this would be a good way to get familiar with the system.

I am not sure if I'm posting in the right place, but I just came here looking for advice on what I should be prepared for. I am a little nervous, because I'm a very busy mommy to a toddler, and plan on getting pregnant again soon. I decided just to go ahead and sign up, since I keep putting it off till my life calms down, but I think my life will never calm down so I might as well just do it.

Good for you! We need all the help we can get. I am a GAL in Tampa. I started as a volunteer and now work full time as a GAL. You may see and hear a lot of things you never wanted too, but when you see those kids, it is all worth it. Just to know that I am making a difference for them, makes it all worth while.

The amount of time you spend on a case is really up to you. It depends on the type of case you have and what is going on. You will have a supervisor that will guide you every step of the way. If you need a couple months off for having a baby that can be worked out. Don't wait...you are right, things will never calm down. Go for it, they have lots of people to help you.
