slow feeder

our baby takes looooog feeds sometimes almost an hour for 4z bottles. he takes so long that by the time he is finished he is still hungry. this is interfering with our ability to get him backto sleep in the middle of the night and during the day its one long graze with few naps, he is only 6 weeks old and we are happy he is taking in so many calories since hes in he 25th percentile he has a great suck but spends alot of time toying with the nipple, rolling it around in his mouth etc. i try to slyly replace it with a pacifer and sometimes it works.

why do some babies have such a lovefest with the bottle? i have heard some babies are grazers, is this what that means? he is a good baby but really freaks out i mean gors ballistic if i am even 30 seconds slow making his bottle anyone relate? btw I am typing this with one hand as I feed him in the boppy.

Also I can NEVER dress him in his cute clothes because there is so little down time while he's awake? this just a superficial side note

I feel like this is normal but would love to hear from other moms with similar babies.

Thanks!

Yup, normal.
When Eve was that age it took all of an hour to get that bottle down. And she'd go from zero to freak out in five seconds or less when she decided she was hungry. Actually, she still does sometimes.
She also never really wore her "cute" clothes. But in her case it was because she had acid reflux and we jsut kept her in onesies because they were easiest to change.
Now, she sucks down five to six ounces in less than ten minutes and hardly spits up at all.
One thing: Could the nipple be too big/small for him? Or maybe a different style might help?

We use Dr. Brown bottles and maybe they do take a while to get down but when he drinks from Advent it goes too fast and he spits up. I can't wait for the day he his stomach gets big enough to get his food down in 10 minutes!!!!

I can't believe he's only 5 weeks (not six!) we have so far to go! Anyway thanks for your reply. I knew this couldn't be unusual!!!!

I think that can be normal. Kelcee took quite a while at first. After a few months it decreased and got quicker.

Totally normal

Vienna took forever to drink bottles at first but now she's 7 months and has jumped from not being ON the chart to 50th for height and 50th for weight. She can down a bottle like no one's business. I think we just tried a few different kinds of nipples before we got ones she liked. She kind of liked the flat ones with the hole in the bottom of them because she could suck a lot without choking on those when she was really little.

This, too, shall pass!

My little fella took a really long time when he was very young, then picked up the pace after a few months (still slow, but not super-duper slow). Now, he's 7-1/2 months old, and he's back to not finishing in any reasonable time. Part of the issue now is nosiness-- he's easily distracted by anything: a dog walking by, mommy shifting in her seat, the telephone ringing. . . ugh. Also, he's teething, so he loves to rub the bottle against him gums. Oh-- and he's starving all the time!
