To Roll or Not to Roll (Over, That Is)
OK ladies (and gentlemen), I've been getting a little concerned and I'd like some opinions here.
Eve hasn't rolled over yet. She's just over five months. She'll rock all the way to her side and then just sort of give up and flop back. She had acid reflux pretty badly so missed out on daily tummy time until she was about four months. Now she spends time on her belly every day and absolutely hates it. She does everything else a five month old is supposed to do and then some. She can push herself all over the place with her legs on her back or tummy, support herself on her arms when she's on her belly, etc. Oh, and she's rolled over in her sleep at least three times. Should I be worried? When are they really supposed to master this? Everyone keeps saying she'll get there in her own time and I really did believe them, but I'm starting to wonder if maybe we aren't a little past that time. What do you think? |

I would say if Eve is doing everything else she should, don't worry!
My DD had hip dysplasia when she was born and was put into a pavlik harness for 3 months all the time and 1 more month just at night, so she never got to do much of the moving around that younger babies get. She rolled over for the first time at 7 months, and it wasn't until about 8-9 months she started doing it regularly. I just chalked it up to she didn't get to move/have tummy time till she was a little older. She was a little slower to walk, too, but now at 17 months she's toddling all over the house. |

She sounds like she's doing everything she should be at this age. In fact, that she's mobile already is huge. Roo didn't roll over until after 7 months and has been on target ever since. |

Nikki: I wouldn't worry, especially if she's rolled in her sleep. But if you wanted to, you could play a little game with her---H used to like to roll "downhill" on a pillow on our bed. We'd prop him on his tummy on a pillow, give him a little gentle assist and then let gravity take over, rolling him off the pillow onto the bed.

Hi Nikki,
I would not worry at all. Our guy took until about 6 months to roll, and then only did it sparingly. He also hated being on his tummy, so would roll one way but never the other. Anyways, he is 13 months now and developmentally on target - although he never crawled - he just "bum scoots".... It's true - they do things in their own time - enjoy your baby!

I LOVE it! DD did the same thing... just scooted on her bum. We did finally get her to crawl the traditional way, but she'll still move around on her bum... especially if she wants to carry something with her. ![]() |

She sounds like she is right on track! Don't worry at all!!!
Unless she is like my guy, then the only thing to worry about is she is taking it slow now, not because she can't do it, but because she is just scoping it all out so when she does get going, Look Out!!! lol DS did roll very early a couple times, but not when he thought I was watching, ie: in his crib, on the floor when I was more than 10 feet from him. Then he stopped. Wouldn't roll at all for a purpose, like to try to get somewhere. And he never really has rolled except in his crib, I know he can do it, he just doesn't do it. Then for a few months (6-9) he never tried sitting from tummy or crawling or anything, it was even hard to get smiles and giggles from him for a bit. He just studied everything. Then at 9 months 1 week, he was off. Saturday - he pulled himself up to standing, Sunday - he sat up from tummy, Monday - he started scooting, Tuesday - he started crawling, Wednesday - he started cruising along furniture, Thursday - he started climbing stairs!! I'm not exagerating!! We went from 0 to 60 in a week. All the babyproffing and safety devices (that we kept putting off) had to be done like NOW! So really, at this age, try not to worry. Babies have their own agenda that we are not priveleged to know in advance.

Same here! DD finally crawled 2 weeks ago at 17 months! Still scoots about half the time though. She also just pulled herself up to stand for the first time yesterday. To the OP - there is such a wide range of normal. Even though my DD is so late in many of these things, it's just her way. It doesn't mean anything is wrong. It's hard not to worry, but take heart from all these posts. She'll develop at her own rate.

I would not be to concerned right now. She sounds like she is on track. I think Kelcee rolled between 4-6 months consistantly. They all have their own time frame.

She's doing everything else so I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I agree with everyone else-- it's way too early to worry, if she's doing other stuff. My Lamb is 7-1/2 months old, and still will only roll tummy to back. And that's only because he hates being on his tummy so much, he immediately flips over when I put him down that way! I complained to his doc that I thought he would never crawl. He said that it's possible he won't. . . and that's fine too.

Thanks so much everyone! I guess Eve's just been so far ahead on everything else I expected her to just keep up full steam.
Not to mention we went through the whole too small head circumference thing so maybe I'm more aware of what she does and doesn't do now. |

Yuna didn't roll over until I think, about 6 months, didn't crawl until almost 9 months, and at 11 months isn't showing any interest in walking. While I think that's still normal, she's been behind the other babies in her daycare and that we see around, and it worries me. I try to remind myself of all the things she CAN do that other babies don't/won't -- there's quite a list. That makes me worry a little less. I also try to remind myself of children I know who were a little late doing something when they were babies and who are fine now. My cousin didn't walk until 15 months and now she's a very active, normal 10 year old, for example.

So I did all the worrying and what does Eve do Saturday? Flips over from her back to her belly.
I didn't get to see her do it, but I left her playing in her little floor gym thingy while I did some dishes. I walked back into the living room to check on her and there she was on her belly. Go figure. She hasn't done it again, but she got sick first thing Sunday morning so she's been mostly sleeping since then. |

WTG Eve!!! In regards to your last post, it probably is partly due to the fact she is busy doing other things instead of rolling. Roo rolled over and sat up within a few days of the other. And now, he is so busy climbing on everything and driving his Momma crazy that he's forgotten about walking... sigh... |
