bathtub safety--help please

Three nights ago we put K into the big tub. She likes it fine. She also loves to try to climb things. She is already trying to climb out of the tub, over the edge.

PLEASE any advice?

We have given her some toys in there, but climbing is more fun. I definitely want to stop this--sitting on bottoms only in the tub!

Help please!!!

The only thing I found was being firm and repetative until the message got through. 'Uh oh! (and look stern) No no! We SIT in the bathtub!' and sitting them back down. When they even bend their knees a tiny bit ike they might start to sit I give them a super gi-hugic smile and say, 'YEAH! That's right! SIT down!' and clap for them. (Now you know why I am no longer fit company for adults! LOL)

Be consistant and don't let it go, ever. It is one of those areas that takes time now, but saves time later.

Sometimes you have to do this several times per bath. I cut short bath time when that happens. Depending on their age I may tell them that they are not getting to stay in the tub longer because they won't sit down. 'Oh, how sad. You are not obeying mommy and sitting down. We have to get out of the tub now. You can do better tomorrow.' Then matter-of-factly get the towel and get them out.

However, if it is a bit more than they are likely to comprehend I just say, 'Ok, time to get out!' and cheerfully get them out after they are all washed up.

They also make those little support rings for kids to sit in, but if she's climbing I think she's beyond that.

Red,

Kelcee never wanted to climb out because she loves the water.

What about the crayons that can write on the bathtub to keep her occupied. I also second the be firm and repetative about sitting. If she refuses then the bath is over.

Kelcee has these squirting water toys that she loves so that keeps her occupied also. She likes to wash herself so she feels that she is doing the fun work.

I agree, firmness and distraction. Good luck!

Have been trying different things. Have a few toys in the tub. But when they float away she tries to crawl to get them--not much safer than standing in the tub. Trying to wash her, correct her into sitting (which tonight resulted in blood curdling screams), and not lose my balance was a little frustrating. And the bath mat I bought is like a raft in the tub. It won't suction to the bottom--I think it is our tub--has a very cmooth surface, like a plastic feel to it.
Anyway, thanks for the support and I will keep trying.

Redbone---You might try some of those foam toy things that stick on the sides of the tub. H has some letters, a little racetrack w/ cars, etc. They don't float away, and they cut down on the standing up, because he can reach them from a sitting position.

Also I second the tub crayons. I face him toward the back of the tub, away from the fixtures---ours are old fashioned and can't be covered. I've always done it that way, so he's used to not looking at them or trying to stand up and grab them.

For the first several months of Woob in the big tub, we installed a bath seat. He never once tried to crawl or climb out of it. It hooked tot he side of the tub and was stable. Go look at Target.
