Teething/Lack of appetite

My Isabella is a healthy little 9 mo. old. Her two lower teeth came in about two weeks ago. She's been miserable since. I noticed that her appetite is about half what it was before she started teething. But I notice that she's still growing (like a weed). Has anybody else seen this in their children?

thanks,
Susan

My little one was famous for that. She wasn't reall cranky but dropped off the eating charts. If you are worried you should give your ped a call just to ease your mind.

Thanks.

How long did this last for your daughter?

It really depended but on average I would say for about 1-2 weeks. Is she running any fever? Can you give Tylenol or Motrin and see if that helps perk her up? Not fun at this stage. You just feel terrible for them.

yikes!

No fever yet.

I'm wondering is the crankiness etc going to last until they get the last tooth in? That could be years!

I was going to post the same question today!

Before last Thursday, it was stretch to get K to eat at least 3 hours between feedings. Then, suddenly, beginning Thursday and since, her eating is about half as well! She is also sucking some on the bottle, then crying and/or grunting.
I thought maybe I should try to find a bigger nipple size, or could be due to a cold she has now come down with (though not last week), and considered it could be also teething.

But I guess I won't know it is teething until I see the tooth pop through. No teeth yet, so we will be new to this.

I didn't know a drop in appetite was a teething sign, so this could be an interesting week or two!

The weird thing is that she'll eat ok when she's sleeping but not when she's awake. I don't know what to make of that.

I would put a call into your ped. They'll either want to see her or not. No harm but you will feel more at ease.

While some moms/peds/etc will tell you that teething and eating are not related, for Nick they 100% are. If he is cutting a tooth, he will ONLY eat his most favorite foods: bananas and yogurt. (Basically, two foods that involve little to no chewing.) As soon as each tooth (or set of teeth) would finally break THROUGH the skin, he would go back to eating his same array of foods.

However, if you've got a sluggish baby on your hands or a strangely high temp, call your doc and talk to the nurse. I love our phone nurse. We talk a lot.

Covenantmom - DD was 7 months on the 2nd and this is exactly what we have been going through the last week or so. I took her to the ped yesterday and she checked her over and said "She has a runny nose, she's teething and just doesn't feel good." She also told me that it was ok to alternate Tylenol and Motrin - I have given her some when she seems extra fussy and it has made a difference. Good luck.

When in doubt, and I think teething is the culprit, I administer Hyland's Teething Tablets or Camillia drops. If his fussiness eases up, I know it's due to teething. There still may be a couple days of lack of appetite, but that usually comes back full force.

We are going through the same thing as well. DS was 6 months last week and cut his first two teeth the previous week. For about 2 weeks before they poked through, his appetite dropped. He still wanted solids, but mostly just cool soft fruits. Nothing warm. After 2 or 3 onces of milk, he would cry, fuss, chew on the nipple. But he's still growing and gaining. This lasted for about 10 days after the teeth poked through, until they were about half way up. Now, he's back to his usual self. He's making up for it now, eating ALOT!!! Which is good cause it looks like round two may come soon.... poor baby.
I tried the Hylands as per Storks recomendation. Thanks!!!! We call them the happy pills around here! They are great and I just put them on DS's tounge and they disolve instantly.

Funny - My MIL is watching the babe today, and when I last checked in, she said he was a little fussier than usual and not eating as much, so she gave him the tablets (he LOVES those things! They're like happy candy to him....), and we figure he's teething again. Apparently, it never ends.... I supposed I've got another whole year of it.... But it could be worse...

When DD was younger we didn't have the loss of appetite thing, but our pediatrician said it could happen and that if it does they might eat about 1/2 as much as usual (her kids had this happen as well).

We are now getting our first molars and Jessica is very picky about eating right now. In the last two weeks or so 3 different molars have broken through the gums. Some days she won't eat much and then some days she devours food. I don't think she is having a problem thriving though. She is 98% for height and around 75-80% for weight.
