Sign Language Videos

I'll ask here because you guys are my favorite parents.

Have any of you borrowed/rented/purchased a sign language video? Did you get one that specifically focused on children? What is it? Do you like it? Did you use it?

We borrowed a sign language DVD from the library. And Nicholas watched for a few minutes with me, moving his hands (obviously not to make the signs) but, my gosh, it was even too dry for ME to watch. AH!

So, I'm searching. Pass on titles to me.

We were introduced to baby signing during our post-placement classes at our agency. One more reason I love them.

They did show a video of a man (Joseph Garcia, I think?) doing hundreds of signs. Too many -- I was overwhelmed.

So we bought the book instead and it worked well for us.

I took a sign language class at church, so I didn't need a video, I just used what I had learned. My youngest son was signing drink by 6 months and eat around the same age. He still signs more (as he's saying it) and eat.

I saw a dvd set that I would love to have for my kids. I could be wrong, but I think it's called Signing Time. Let me look all that up and see if I can find it again and get back with you!

Am I allowed to post links on here or should I pm them to you?

There is a group of DVD's called Baby Signing Time. It's done by the same woman who does Signing Time in PBS on Saturday mornings.

It would also depend on what you want your baby to learn. If you want baby signs or if you want to teach ASL. My personal choice would have to be ASL so I've kind of shied away from some of the baby sign books.

I know of a good web site for either selection if you would like it. Just let me know.

I have a website, I just wanted to do a video.

I did look up Signing Time on our library website. I can request a copy in from another library so I'm going to do that. I'll let you all know what I think!

Thanks guys! WOO!

Gah, bummer. I'm the third in line for request. And it was due back on the 6th. *rolls eyes* I hate when people are late with their library returns! GAH!

We have Baby Signing Time and my 19 month old fs LOVES it! He knows quite a bit of sign language. Signing time is very fast paced, bright, and she has neat songs to go with each sign. All my fs's love it. They are 7,5,5 and 19 months. I know Signing Time has lots of different volumes. They get harder, I believe, as you go up. The cost was a little high for Baby Signing Time, but well worth it.

I'm a huge fan......

I'm not a mom (yet!) but I did want to pass along something:

I volunteer in a special education/early intervention preschool class and they use regular ASL signs for things, i.e. cookie, drink, sit, stand, please, thank you, etc. When one of the kids is doing something they aren't supposed to be doing, all we have to do is say the child's name once and sign what we want them to do instead of interrupting the teacher's sentence to talk to the child. I haven't seen baby signs, but if they are different than ASL signs, the child might have problems understanding ASL in the future if their teacher(s) decide to use it in the classroom. Just something to think about...

Good luck either way. I love the idea of teaching children sign language.
