suddenly spitting out food
Meal times have always gone well for us, for the most part. A's been a good eater, as far as veggies and fruits (pretty much everything he's tried EXCEPT potatoes, which he LOATHES).
Suddenly, the past few days, he thinks he can just spit most of it back out. He really isn't eating much. Of course, I can contribute this to growth spurt, teething, sudden change in likes/dislikes, boredom, doing it for fun, who knows what! SAHD is worried about him today, that he's not getting enough to eat. I know he is (he's also still on formula), but I dont' want this to become a habit. Do you think this is just a stage he's going through? We even tried two of his favorites (one veggie, one meat/pasta meal) for lunch today, but he's just not wanting them. Yet he's eating all the smooth fruit and real banana pieces he can get. Any advice?

I remember Kelcee doing a lot of that. She still is one that will eat something this week but next week is a different story. Also, because she doesn't eat protein on a regular basis I put her on a vitamin. She too isn't starving because she isn't losing any weight and is drinking whole milk. Good luck. I don't of any great cures. For awhile when I was really worried I put about 1/4 of a teaspoon of cinnamon sugar on things just so she might like what she is eating. It worked a lot of the time. It wasn't enough sugar to mean anything I just hoped it might get her to eat that day.

Nick just broke an eye tooth through yesterday and all week he had been doing a similar thing with his food; either spitting it out or not taking a bite.
I'd keep an eye on it through the weekend. Take a feel around his mouth for any new teeth. And if he doesn't seem to be eating more by next week sometime, give your doc a call if you're still concerned. ![]()

Actually, our one year checkup is next Wednesday. And do we have a long list of questions for him this time!
You know how when one thing seems odd, all of a sudden you start seeing 20 other symptoms or out of character things happening with your child? Well, that's us this week. I bet hubby called 3 times today to tell me not to worry, but he has been noticing this or that, and add it to the ped question list. Which brings me to a good idea for a new thread......

I feel your pain!!
M went thorugh that--she was a FABULOUS eater, then she realized she could spit it out. I took it to be more of a)her tastes/preferences developing and b)she learned how to spit out food--she suddenly realized she was in control.
I started to have a little more variety so she could pick and choose within reason, and then used applesauce as my back up. I don't remember it lasting very long--I think she got hungry! I tried to respect when she'd spit it out or turned her head that she truly wasn't hungry/interested. It was hard, but I'm trying to avoid sticking her with my food issues!! Now she's learned to shake her head no--so when I hold something out to her, she'll shake her head if she doesn't want it. At least it cuts down on food waste!! |
