Breakfast Anyone?

What does your older first year child eat for breakfast? In terms of amount?

I was feeding Nick his breakfast a month or so ago at my therapist appointment (because I take him everywhere; I do) and my therapist thought I was feeding a "little guy" an "awful lot." *looks sideways* Uhm, he eats all of it and then usually wants some puffs or fruit bites.

He gets three tblspns of oatmeal mixed with a third jar of pureed oatmeal (usually organic oatmeal/banana/peach). He loves it, eats it all and, as I said, will eat a few puffs or so while I clean up the kitchen.

I don't think I'm feeding him too much.
Am I?

Blah. Self-doubt sucks.

Schemma - DS loves his breakfast. That amount seems about what I was feeding DS at that point. He is now 16 months old and it has tapered off. He ususally has his milk, a yogurt and then some fruit - whatever is his current favorite.

He may or may not do lunch. I just go with flow.

*nods* We also go with the flow. It's just that in the morning, he seems ravished from a night of giggling in his sleep.

Lunch is usually hit or miss on if he finishes what we open. And dinner he eats quite a bit.

I don't know. I can usually handle when people question my parenting but it felt weird coming from my therapist.

He's a good eater. I don't want to CHANGE that! LOL

Schmenna-my little guy was (and still is) eating a whole lot, or it would seem that way for people who saw. I freaked when I heard a news report about how our stomaches are the size of our fists and if you eat more than that you're over eating . I figure, he is eating it, and not throwing it up...which he would do if he was too full. Also, he would stop eating when he's full. I think ultimately the parent is a good judge of what our children may or may not need. You know what your lil one needs and what your lil one doesn't, I wouldn't worry to much about it. I think you are doing fine.

Jenna,

When H was Nicks age, she was eating a whole jar fo fruit, plus oatmeal every monring. This along with a 4oz bottle. She ate until she was full and could always tell me to stop. She's a healthly little girl that was neither too thin or chunky.

Babies are great at dtermining their own food intact. It's adults that have a problem with that. *looks down at waist line*

I agree---babies self regulate. Blow it off unless your therapist is ALSO a child nutritionist with a ten month old of her own who's in perfect health.

Well, she did raise twins who are amazingly fit athletes.

Oh, he lets me know if he's not hungry anymore. Hands in front of his face with a hardy, "NO!" heh

Sophie eats 2 or 3 tablespoons of cereal (oat) mixed with half pureed fruit (stage 2) but she will drink 6 oz of formula right after... She is a good eater too, and I'm about to ask the doctor if I can start giving her yogurt or something different for breakfast...

As long as he refuses food when he's full, I'd say you're giving him the right amount. He hasn't eaten in what, 12 hours or so?? Of course he's hungry!

Megan's always been a good breakfast and lunch eater, and then just sort of picks at dinner....which is why she's such a good breakfast eater!!

Funny - Hubby and I were just discussing this yesterday. Hoping the doc doesn't ask us how much at the 12 month checkup. It's so hard to say! It just depends on his mood.

BUT - if he's hungry, he'll take several Tbs of cereal, then anywhere from one half to a full Stage 2 jar of fruit (or usually the equivalent of something homemade). And I usually let him have Cheerios to snack on while I"m getting ready/cleaning up. And the past week, he LOVES yogurt (Isa- we just found Stoneyfield Yo Baby organic yogurt in 6 packs, and he LOVES IT! Blueberry, apple, pear - yummy!), so he might ALSO eat 1/2 to a full thing of yogurt.

Sometimes, he'll also take a half a banana now, chunked up.

But, then lunch and dinner might be hit or miss - a jar and a half of something, or just a few bites, then he's finished.

Here's our little dilemma - he loves to eat puffs, cheerios, and graham cracker bits by himself, but does not want to eat anything slimy or mushy (fruit or veggie pieces) unless they're fed from a spoon...

And we're a bit on the big side (well, he is), so I read the thing about the fist-sized stomach too, Christina, and freaked, because I thought he was eating for MY size stomach. But it must take a lot to power taht little kids sometimes. Other times, I feel like he's starving himself.

So we just let him dictate....

I go by what Kelcee wants. She lets me know when she is hungry and how much she wants. She is 16 months old now and does not eat very much. If Nick isn't a picky eater be glad. Kelcee will normally eat about 4 oz of oatmeal and sometimes 4 oz of milk in the am. Lunch might be a snack because she usually isn't all that hungry. By 5 she might eat some baby soup which is about 4 oz. She does have milk through out the day too. She likes the puffs and veggie wheels, fruit, yogurt, and all of a sudden is into butter pretzels.

Stork, I found the yogurt you mentioned, Sophie loved it.. she didn't want me to put the spoon down. Doctor approved to try egg yolk, which I scrambled this morning and she also loved it... She is a good eater and so far she likes everything I have given her.
