Unhappy Diarrhea. Bleh.

Nicholas (six months old next week... whoa) has his first bout with diarrhea. He's also teething again (chewing HARD and drooling a lot). Researching on the internet says that diarrhea and teething are not connected... while Dr. Sears believes that they may have a connection.

Did your child have diarrhea when he/she teethed? (He has no fever.)

What can I do for him? He drinks a little bit of pedialyte but not much... more like he plays with the bottle and "tastes it" a bit. He also does the same with water. He still has a sufficient amount of wet diapers.

It's just breaking my heart. We've got cream on his poor little bum because it's red.

I just feel so awful.

Hey Jenna, all of my children had diarrhea when they were teething I would try giving him bananas as they may harden his stool a bit, or applesauce...so sorry to hear he is having such a hard time. Big hugs to nick! Big hugs for mommy too I understand how hard it is to see our little ones hurt!

And so it's a small virus. And the Babe is now with me at work because we're shorthanded. My Boss gave me the okay and so, here we are. It's an impromptu take your kid to work day... with diarrhea!

Update: Nick doesn't process iron well (as in it binds him up) so a little rice cereal with some bananas? Baby Immodium.

He's still not 100% but he's doing much better.

Hey Jenna Glad to hear Nick is on his way to recovery!! I had always heard that bananas would make constipation worse, hmmm maybe it is the rice cereal that will actually help, good luck with that 2 of my 4 children have had the intestinal flu for the last 24 hours, sleep...whats that??

Hugs to the little man

Bananas can make constipation worse but diarrhea better. So mixing with the iron in the cereal is a sure way to stop up the boy.

Quote:
  1. It is claimed that some fruit, such as bananas, mangoes, papaya and pineapple may have positive effects on this condition. Bananas have the merits of being easily obtainable, and they are unlikely to have any other significant unwanted side effects. Bananas and mangoes are high in soluble fiber, which can help regulate water content in the bowel and alleviate diarrhea. Mucilage, which can be obtained in capsule form, may be helpful for the same reason. Mucilage can also be used as cereal for babies, as it is easily digested. The high acid content of pineapple may make this food a bad choice for people suffering from chronic diarrhea.

Don't worry too much about his little bum. I live overseas and had my OWN bout of diarrhea recently and was forced to use my daughter's Boudreaux's Butt Paste. Let me tell you, it's good stuff and works like a charm!

(Sorry, was that TMI? )

Glad your little one is feeling better. Hope things keep looking up!

I've heard that about Boudreaux Butt Paste too. The other thing that works, especially if his bottom is getting
raw is an antifungal cream like Lotrimin. Natalie had a fairly nasty diaper rash last week while we were visiting my sister in TN and she told me about it. Sure enough after about two diaper changes with it, her bottom was getting a lot better.

I prefer the runny splats to the hard lumps. My poor little Cj has had some bouts of constipation that are SO painful. Stool softening suppositories were wonderful and the only thing that would work.
On this island, we use feed kids papaya for constipation and bananas for the squits.
A virus, however, is a virus...
I'd like to hear more about this Butt paste. My kids don't need it, as their posterior skin stays nice (tropical climate/lots of time in the sea), but, I want to hear more anyway. Is that the REAL name? Clever marketing!

Hey Jenna..we are no straners to lose bowels here..unfortuantely! What has worked for us is called lactobacilus...you can get it in a health food store and it helps BIGTIME with diahrea...ur ped recommended it. You put 1 tsp in his formula 1X a day and it helps...lactobacillus is a active culture found in yogurt and so forth that aids in gastrointestinal issues.

Good luck!

--Renee

PS - The butt paste works great and actually smells good! Lol.

Oooh! A Mommy friend had suggested yogurt in general if the bananas didn't help him so I will DEFINITELY be picking up some of that for the (gosh forbid) next time around.

So much good information!

Somewhere between 5 and 6 months we also went through the same thing. Gastroenteritis I guess. It was going around. Coincidentally, he was also teething. So who knows!

Boudreaux's - we use Vaseline for day-to-day and overnight needs, but the Butt Paste was pulled out for heavy duty during the bad bout, and we stayed diaper-rash and pink free!

The sad thing about the whole bout is that it ruined his nighttime sleeping schedule. But that's for a new post coming soon.....
