teething-what stuff do we need on hand?

we have a three month old who is drooling buckets so we expect her to start teething at any moment (though we know this is early. in anticipation of this thrilling event, we figure there are things we should have on hand. Are there things we should have on hand? particular teething rings, maybe orajel, etc. that we should have? We figure it is better to have these things on hand before we need them.

thanks,

LisaCA

I have read that orajel (and medicines like it) don't last too long. I reccomend a few good teething rings (that you stick in the fridge) and infant tylenol.
Our 6 month old fs also likes it if you ub his gums with your fingers and he likes his own fingers.

When the baby is old enough, frozen waffles are good too.

Hi!

3 months may not be "too" young for teething as my DS got his bottom 2 teeth at 4 months old. Now at 8 months he has his bottom 2 and top 4 teeth! Even our ped was amazed at that. What has worked best for us besides teething rings in the fridge are cold, wet washcloths for him to chew on. And stock up on plastic backed bibs for sure! I tried the baby orajel but it was really hard for me to get on his gums...I even tried to prefilled swab ones and he hated the taste so I backed that off because once I did it right it didn't seem to make a difference. I'm not too into giving tylenol but we did give him some just to see if that helped...it just made him sleep better (and us, too...lol!) But I felt like I was "drugging" him so I stopped. He has a great teething ring...it is shaped like a hand and filled with water and has little ridges on it. I'm not sure of the manufacturer but he likes it the best. Also like the previous poster just simply rubbing his gums helped a lot.

Good luck and let us know when you see some teeth!!!

Hi Lisa,

Maybe your little one has teeth by now, but thought I'd add here...

Elise started drooling like crazy around three months, too. But her first teeth didn't pop through till she was almost exactly 7 months.

So if the teeth haven't come yet, don't worry..... some babies just drool a lot....

As for what we use: Orajel and Infant Tylenol. Usually spread some Orajel on her gums and then give her a dose of Tylenol, too. The Tylenol works better but takes a while to kick in, so we use the Orajel to give her a little relief until the Tylenol starts working.

She also likes to suck cold, wet washclothes. She LOVES these, makes her much happier than teething rings.

I tried the orajel- did not work I guess some went down
his throat and it was really hard for him to drink his bottle.
I used Infant Motrin it is made for teething, it really helped
with the gums being so swollen and it did not cause him
to go to sleep if I gave it to him during the day. It did
make him sleep a lot better at night.

Infant Tylenol, Zwieback Toast, old air-dry Bagels worked for us.

My daughter really loved those little teething toys that vibrate slightly when they are chewed on. It seemed to soothe her.

I also would give her a whole, well washed, cold carrot. It was the perfect size for her to hold, but she choke on it.

My 3 month old seems to be really work his gums too and his favorite thing to gnaw on is flesh!!! (anyones will do really)

Good luck!!

Oh there also some "natural" teething relief tablets that dissolve in their mouth. One friend swore by them another thought they didn't work at all..

i have to agree with the frozen wet wash clothes my son liked that the best. also, if your child is under 6 months you should not use motrin cuz i think it may have ibuprofen and you should not give infants under 6 months ibuprofen. my ped said that if i gave tylenol for teething, to rub the dropper over his gums before i gave him the med. it has a numbing affect that works better than orajel. and, lots of bibs!!!!!

depending on what your child can handle, in addition to day-old bagels, frozen eggo waffles (the minis) did the trick for my daughter, but she got teeth very late (almost 1 yr)

Hi Lisa, I used Humphries (i think that's how you spell it) teething tablets. I LOVED them!! They are natural tablets that dissolve in their mouth. You'll find them in any drugstrore. Plus I'd give her teething toys & she was a happy camper!

Good luck to you!!!

thanks for all the tips guys. she's now four months old and so far no teeth, but we still want to be prepared. All these tips sound fantastic. my fear is that she'll start teething on a sunday nite and I'll be freaking out since I won't have all the supplies on hand.

thanks again,

LisaCA

Hey Lisa...thought i'd let you know about something...

The health unit, and doctor's here strongly discourage using things like orajel...anything that numbs....apparently it can numb too many other things, and children can choke.

Just thought i'd pass that on
Leigh

I used cold carrots with all of my children. It turns them orange but it comes off. I used Tylenol and teething tablets. I don't like the numbing gels. My babies liked the vibrating teethers, too.

Leigh and skootinalong2,

thanks for the tips and the warning about the orajel. it makes sense. Dd is still drooling buckets and gumming her hands to death. No sign of teeth yet, but we suspect any day now. I think she'll be one of those who has all of them erupt at once:-).

thanks,

LisaCA
