home made baby food

Hi all,
I have been making baby food for our 6 month old foster son and wondering what other foods we can try with him.

So far, he has had all the usual stuff: Baby cereal, applesauce, peaches, pears, sweet potatoes, carrots, greenbeans. peas, and various mixtures of the above.

He seemed to like the plain yogurt we gave him tonight. Just a teaspoonful to see if he has any reactions.

He has no teeth yet, so we are holding off on meats.

Are blueberries ok? Cauliflower? Broccoli?

I did some website searches but they were useful for recipes for older babies.

Thanks

Hi Lea,

My DS is going to be 8 months old tomorrow. Our pediatrician recommended staying away from yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. until at least 9 months just in case of an allergy but my little man eats pretty much anything you give him and so far no adverse reactions. Have you tried bananas or squash? (my son's favs). I tried spinach which didn't go over too well at first but now no problems at all. He loves broccoli and cauliflower separate & mixed together. Also beets!! (not a fav of mine at all). Blueberries, strawberries, rasberries...all great! Mix them with apples or bananas or a combination of them. You can even try some pastina or a little mashed white potatoe mixed with a veggie. I wouldn't be afraid of meats--start with poultry and pulverize it and mix it with a veggie. My son loves chicken & turkey...so far I haven't tried beef. I use the combinations of jarred baby food as inspirations...like Apple Mango Kiwi (so yummy)...or Sweet Potatoe & Apples, Plum & Rasberry, green been, peas & carrots...I guess the possibilities are endless!!!

Hope this helps! Good luck and feel free to pm me if you'd like!

yep, that gives me some ideas. so far, no negative reactions to the yogurt. He loves bannanas, didn't like squash.

I had read that you should stay away from spinach for the first year, something about nitrates and hemoglobin.
We gave him a little piece of soft baked potatoe at the restaraunt today, he seemed interested.

I will take another look at the grocery store and see what is on the shelves.

Thanks!!
What is pastina?

A friend of mine gets the bags of frozen mixed veggies and makes baby food from them for her child. You know the ones, you might use them for stir-fry veggies. Most stores carry several types.

Hi Lea!

I hadn't read that about spinach but I'll definitely look into it...thanks for the tip! Pastina is very very tiny star shaped pasta (Ronzoni brand) that is great for babies as a substitute for cereal.
I make about a 1/4 cup dry and it boils up to more than enough for him...usually 2 servings worth and then mix it with a veggie or even a little butter if you're not opposed to it. My DS likes it. My mom said it's all they had when she was a baby...made her feel old. Lol. Good Luck!

With the okay of my doctor, when my daughter was ready at about 8 months or so, I introduce soy based meats and cheeses. I found a wonderful macaroni and cheese (no dairy) and she loved the veggie burgers which I could break into little bites. These were a great source of protein.

This was in addition to fruits and veggies, of course..

HI,
I currently make all of my son's baby food and I got a book at a garage sale called Feed Me I'm Yours by Vicki Lansky and it has wonderful reciepes. I am sure they have an updated version as this one seems kinda dated. I had given my son some Gerber stage 2 foods (for the meat ones but was still makeing all of my own veggies and fruits) and they made him really sick so I have started making my own chicken to give him and he has done really great with it. He has been on "people food" since 5 1/2 months. (at 6months we was 22 1/2lbs) Big baby and formula just wasn't doing it.
Not sure if I helped or not but if I can let me know and I would be happy to share any receipes or anything.

I would try mashed avocados.
Remember, under 2 years old they need fat for proper brain development. You want those neurotransmitters firing properly

my foster son is now 10 months old. I like to go to the store and buy any vegatables that are sale, boil and blend. The other day I boiled radishes and onions. I then blended this with a cucumber and he couldn't get enough!! Most of the canned baby food is from the "orange" groups--carrots, squash etc. So I try to buy some other colors to get different vitamins and flavors.

Bananas, Plums, apples and blueberries were the first fruits I bought for DS. (I'd use an apple peeler/corer first on the apples first before processing.) Blueberries are great since they've got lots of Vitamin C and antioxidants.
