Unhappy Cradle cap

Hi.

Does anyone have a sure fire treatment for cradle cap? I just noticed it yesterday on my 10 week old son's precious head and I want to get rid of it quickly.

I tried vaseline as suggested in "What to Expect the First Year," which helped the scaliness, but he has a full head of hair and the vaseline has left him totally greased up. I even washed his hair twice, much to his displeasure.

Any help is appreciated.

i have heard vasiline too, a very experienced fparent i know showed me how to rub it into the scalp and then comb the flakes out. we then had to wash the babies hair twice to get most of the vasiline out. i hope you get some good suggestions, but the vasiline really worked for me. however the baby was aa so the extra moisture from the vasiline worked good.

Thank you, Mckenna. I"ll try using less vaseline next time and combing out the flakes.

Our son is Biracial (AA/C) with loosely curled hair. I think the moisture will do him some good too. His skin tends to be dry but we have that under control.

From experience I have discovered that the best treatment was to apply a small amount of water and a small amount of baby shampoo to the scalp and using the BABY BRUSH gently use a circular motion to wash his scalp. Rinse well. *Baby Magic* Shampoo tends to work better than Johnson's brand but I am not sure why. Dry his head throughly with a soft towel ( do not use the dryer ) and apply a small amount of Baby Magic baby oil; brush thru scalp and let it stay at least overnight. The oil is lighter than Vaseline and coats the scalp easier and without gumming up the baby's hair. It takes appox. 7-10 days to go away. Hope this idea works for you; it did for us....MissyM

Two of my kids had cradle cap as infants - one terribly badly, including in her eyebrows!

I agree with Missy - we used baby oil on the scalp too, left it on overnight, and then used the baby brush in circular motion to loosen it, and then washed it out. It took us a week to get rid of it with the first girl, and close to two with the girl that had it more badly. It's not pretty, is it!? But it's harmless, and passes quickly.

Enjoy your little one -- my youngest is now 6, and the oldest is 18 - I miss the baby times! I even miss washing their hair - something that I never thought I'd miss, but find myself a little sad when my 6 and 7 year olds tell me they're too old to need help!

We used baby oil and then the brush in a circular motion with our daughter. She too is aa/cc. It didn't last long. However, if your sons hair turns out like our 2 yr olds, have fun. Those loose curls can became very tight in no time at all.

Thumbs up Answer to cradle cap...

My son is also about 10 weeks old and started to get cradle cap. I saw on a baby channel in the hospital that you should use baby oil and leave it in for about 10 minutes. Then with a new toothbrush or a soft bristled brush use short strokes and eventually you will start to see the flakes come out.

Don't expect it all to come out in one try or else you might hurt your baby. Try doing it once or twice a day, in the a.m. and in the p.m. until you see it disappear.

Keep doing this once a week if you see you child is prone to cradle cap to stay on top of it before it gets too bad!

Works like a charm for me!

Baby phisoderm is what i used on both of my boys. I applied it then used a baby brush in circles and rinsed.

Cradle Cap

A friend recommended to consistently use one of those loose scrubbies when shampooing hair to keep away cradle cap. You know the kind for like 5 bucks that come in a million colors that are with bath brushes. I've used it since the beginning and no cradle cap so far.

cradle cap

We used dandruff shampoo and the soft brush that they gave us at the hospital. It cleared up right away.

My sister is a pediatric nurse and she says in the hospital they make a past of babyoil and baking soda and rub it on and comb out.

I always used olive oil too, as a pp stated... just like my grandmother told me to.

Gentle Naturals

Gentle Naturals makes a cradle cap treatment that worked great for my daughter. I found it at Walgreens in the baby care section.

Old thread but figured I would share...Our foster son arrived 2 months ago (at 4 mos old) with a thick layer of cradle cap and majorly dry skin on his face.
At first, we did not notice the cradle cap because the flakes were blending in with his skin tone. After a few days, we noticed!

We applied baby oil before his bath, then bathed him and let the water soak in. Afterwards, we brushed and combed out the flakes. Took 2 or 3 good baths to get through it all. Now we apply baby oil every day. Not a lot, just about a quarter size in the palm of your hand.

For his face, we found the aveeno lotion to work wonders.

Old thread, age-old, still appropriate topic!

Not sure how I missed this one before, but we're at 7 mos w/ small amount of continuing cradle cap (fortunately, it blends w/ his hair color). I thought someone else could use these tips. I'll update when I know what worked for us!!!!
