adoption and antidepressant medications
Just wanted to get some input as to how common this situation is. My husband and I tried to begin an adoption internationally from Ecuador. A home study was the first thing that needed to be done, before anything else. We got the home study completed, but it had to be included in it that I am in treatment for depression, both with supportive therapy and medication. I am fully functional in everyday life, I have a job that I love and take care of both home and hubby. I've never been hospitalized for this condition. The social worker who wrote up our home study did an excellent job of putting everything in a positive light. I found out this past week that our home study was rejected by the government of Ecuador, because of my medication issue. I'm totally heartbroken; are all foreign countries like this? Which countries would be more open to such a situation? Thanks for any input.

I adopted domestically, through the state, and my clinical depression, including daily medication, was not a problem at all. I do not have any info. on how other countries might deal with this issue, but I hope someone on the board will be able to tell you.
Good luck. |

Foreign adoption
I do believe most foreign countries have similar requirements. A friend of mine had to get his record expunged because he was caught drinking under age and now, over 11 years later, he and his wife would have been eliminated from China because of it. It really does not seem fair and the only reason they gave my friend that this exists is that the cultural differences between countries cannot be sorted through so any little thing on your application can weed you out altogether.
I would suggest trying a domestic adoption. Good luck! |

Russia & Antidepressents...
What about Russia? Does anyone know about Russia? How would I find out if this will be a problem for me also?

Many people look down at one who takes an antidepressant medication.Quite frankly, antidepressants are given to restore serotonin levels in the brain.Antidepressants are given to help with depression, anxiety, pms, sleep disorders, smoking cessation, etc.I work in a hospital setting and several doctors take antidepressants. As long as you function normally, and do not have a serious mental illness,it will not be a problem for a domestic adoption.Perhaps you should try that route???Just a suggestion.

I, too, take antidepressants and am in the process of adopting domestically through foster care. The fact that I'm on medication didn't make a bit of difference. As a matter of fact the worker that did our homestudy made the comment that it showed I reached out for help when I felt I needed it.
I'm not sure if adopting domestically appeals to you or not but I don't think your "medical condition" would be an issue. Best of luck. Michelle
