Abandonment in Maryland
I was wondering the laws on abandonment in Maryland. We have a beautiful baby since birth going through a hopeful private adoption. The baby is now 14 months old. We have had temporary custody this whole time, and are just wondering are chances of getting a final adoption. The birth father has wavered in his decision the latest being he wants full custody. Nothing has been done no push for visitation, no push for court on his part. We feel we have done everything we can even offered open adoption. WE continue to pray that this will soon end. No court date has been set. WE are told the longer we have the baby the better. This baby is just so attached to us and knows us only as mommy and daddy. I have posted several times on this board. I just really need to know what happens in these cases. Is the best interest of the child ever considered? How long can this go on?

I wouldn't offer open adoption because he can say you are trying to bribe him.

I can not speak for Maryland at all. In my case, in another state, if I could go back I would have brought DHR in and had then TPR and complete the adoption. But since each state varies widely I do not know about MD. I recommend DHR only because they do seem interested (well, most of the time) in the best interest of the child and can do a TPR and adoption legally on your behalf. They may, however, first consider blood kin, so keep that in mind as well.
I would at least have an initial consult wth an attorney and then go from there. Good luck. |
