What's in the Dossier for Ethiopia?

We adopted our adorable son from Guatemala last year. Now we're starting the process to adopt from Ethiopia. We're currently researching agencies.

While we decide on the agency, I was hoping to get a jumpstart on the paperchase. Could y'all tell me what's involved?

Thank you.

Peggy,

Welcome to Ethiopian adoptions! Unfortunately this is not an easy answer. While most agencies require the same basic documents in their dossier they are not uniform. You need birth certificates and marriage licenses but how many and if they can been copies or have to be originals will be agency dependant. You will need doctors form -- but is it a letter or an agency specific form? You will need a letter from your employer -- original or copies? You will need a financial institution letter. You will need a financial asset form -- a specific form for some agencies. You will need a letter to the Ethiopian government explaining what you want to adopt from Ethiopia. This is all to say that it might be easier to wait until you hear from your agency about their dossier requirements. Not the answer you wants, I am sure. I will say that the Ethiopian dossier tends to be one of the easier ones.

Good luck,
Samantha

I'll agree with the previous poster about it being fairly easier to gather dossier documents. We started in mid january and have almost everything for our dossier. The few things we have left to do could have easily gotten done quicker but I think our homestudy being so slow has caused us to not push so hard to get the dossier done. We have forms that we need to get notarized to go with our police clearance letters and my husband needs to finish writing the statement for reason to adopt letter so we can get that notarized...we are also waiting on one of the two reference letters and we need to take photos of us and our home all of this could have already been done. Our first home visit will be done april 16th so its not alot of pressure to get stuff done at this point.
Our agency did recommend that we waited to get their ethiopia packet before we started gathering any documents.

I little advice

Wait unitl you have all of your agency's forms. Alos, if you are using a separate placing agency and HS agency, they will each require their own version of the form, but if you have both, you should be able to do them at the same time (doctor's forms, financial forms...)

After you have your lists, it shouldn't take you long to get throught the paperchase.

Ditto what the others have said about waiting until you choose an agency but let me just say, it's MUCH easier than the Guate dossier.

Everyone here has the same advise. We have two Guatemalan sons and will be traveling on August 22nd to pick up our daughter in Ethiopia.

I was shocked with how much easier the Ethiopian dossier was in comparison to the Guatemalan one. But, I would wait until you decide on an agency before starting on any paperwork. They all seem to have different requirements. My agency only required notarized copies of our birth certificates and marriage license and they did not have to be currently issued either. They also had several items that needed to be completed that were in the form of "form" letters. So, instead of spinning your wheels right now, my advise to you would be to concentrate on selecting a really good and ethical agency and start your dossier process once you sign with them and they send you their specific requirements.

Good luck to you!!!!!!
