need help with adoption

I would like to know what agency to used for my adoption? But i guess friest i should ask my husband works for the state department and we move ever four to five years will i have a problem? And also would a home study from the country that i'm in be ok. I can't say what country we are in now but we are very close to Ethiopia and the travel time is not bad to get there when time comes. That's why we thought it would be better if we started now that we here. Please coud anyone tell me were to start or what agency to contact.

I'm thinking you have to find an agency in the country you are living in.

Not sure you would be able to adopt while living there then because who would do your homestudy and things of that nature?? Will you be coming back to the US soon and be able to start an adoption then?

Luckly,

You can adopt from Ethiopia while living abroad. If you or your husband maintains US citizenship you would need to adopt using US agency and following US regulations. I am not sure that all agencies work with people living abroad but I have heard of several people doing this so I know it can be done. As Renee has pointed out your home study might be tricky as you might need to have someone come to you for this. since you pay for transportation costs that could be significantly more expensive for you. I would say that your first step would be to contact some of the US agencies that you would be interested in and have a conversation with them about adopting while living abroad. You may need to be specific with them about where you live. I have known of people living in some of the Asian countries and Isreal while they adopted from Ethiopia through a US agency. You just might need to take some extra steps and it would be best to talk with the agencies about the actual process.

Best of luck,
Samantha

Hi Luckly...
My husband also works for DOD... We are also living abroad. We completed the adoption of our daughter, last March, and are now in process for an older child. If you would like to send me a private message, I will email you with our agency/home study details...
As long as one of you is a US Citizen, it can be done... However, there are a few extra steps...

both of us are U.S citizen. Iwas just worried that would have to fly a social worker to post to a home study when we have one here that is willing to do it for us.

The U.S. Embassy in your country of residence will probably have a list of homestudy providers who can help you. Also, you will probably work with a U.S. agency that serves Americans living abroad, and it will most likely have homestudy workers to recommend.
