Probably a really stupid question re: Meth
I know hardly anything about drugs.
My baby tested positive for Methamphetamines at birth. Recently I took my baby to the hospital and they asked about her history. I said "she tested positive to meth at birth". Later I heard a nurse tell the doctor that "the baby tested positive to Methadone at birth". Isn't this two different things????...and isn't Methamphetamines referred to as Meth??...or is Methadone also referred to the same thing? |

Yep, you're right -- methadone is used to treat opiate addiction, especially heroin. "Meth" is short for crystal methamphetamine, also known as "crank," "crystal", "ice," or "speed".
If I were you, I'd make sure your baby's medical records are corrected as to what drug she was exposed to in utero.

I would double check too. Methadone is actually a harder addiction to break then Meth. Methadone IS used to treat other addictions, but becomes an addiction in its self. It would be very important to find out!

That's just a common mistake that can happen any time someone uses an abbreviation or nickname or street name for something - there's always the chance that a different group of people use the same abbreviation to refer to something else.
Just make sure the medical records have the full and correct name for what he was exposed to. And maybe call it by its full and correct name in the future to avoid similar problems. |

This is true they are 2 VERY differnt drugs that will yeild very different after affects. You may want to make certain that the correct drug is listed in the records.

Methadone is used by heroin addicts to withdrawl safely.
Methamphetamines "crystal meth" is a drug people make in their homes using all kinds of crazy chemicals and cleaning products. We have fostered 2 meth positive children. niether had any obvious affects but I would definately recommend educating yourself as much as possible. |
