Experience with meth exposure early on?
We have a potential situation that involves some meth exposure in the first few months (every other day)before the emom knew she was pregnant. She is now on probation and should be tested regularly. The SW has met with her and she does not have any obvious signs of meth use at this time. (sores, shaking, not eating)
She is 5 months along. It sounds as if CPS will take the child if she does not place with us. Do you have any advice? Thoughts? Experiences? This is so much to have to absorb all at once. I am overwhelmed. Any words of wisdom you can share, I will be grateful!

We don't have any experience with an actual placement although we were the chosen family had the new mother decided to place her child in another home. She chose foster care instead. But here's a thread I posted on recently that give my thoughts. I'm having a tough day writing much today. I'm no expert on it for sure. Just sharing what I learned from my research. You might check out the fostering forums as I believe there are several there who are parenting children with meth exposure. FWIW, the longer it has been since use can affect the amount of effect exposure has on a child. But then again, one time at the wrong time can have great effect. It is so hard and such a leap of faith. Hope it helps. And let us know what happens okay? |

We have 4 Meth exposed kids
6 yr removed at 2 yr old who we adopted.
He has ADHD, ODD, Disruptive Behavior disorder. 3 yr old removed at birth & placed w/us. Emotional Behavior Disorder, probably ADHD 2 yr old removed at birth & Placed w/us Developmental Delays had open heart surgery at 3 months old for a large heart defect 3 mo old removed at birth & placed w/us. Developmental delays All are a joy. They are receiving services thru our school district as well as the oldest going to psychologist for Behavior management, second oldest going to OT for sensory issues. Would I have wanted these children knowing what I know now ? Absolutely. Although love can't conquer all, early intervention services, a loving home,& a parent educated on special needs & in utero exposure issues can help the children live a fantastic life. Good luck to you !
