coumiden

I am feeling motherly towards a young woman pregnant and without much support. She is considering placing the baby for adoption. SHe has a heart issue and therefore is on coumiden. They took her off for a few months when they found out she was pregnant and put her on lovinox. Everything I have read said NEVER be on coumiden while pregnant. I am sure her drs. are doing what is best but for her (although I thought they would leave her on lovinox), but with all I read, I was wandering if anyone had any info on baby's exposed to coumiden? Also since i am new to this area, please advise me if I have posted in the wrong area.
thank you

Was there a specific reason that her doctors took her off Lovenox and put her back on Coumadin (warfarin)? I'm kind of surprised because Coumadin is well-known for causing congenital abnormalities (birth defects), especially if taken during the first trimester. It can also cause hemorrhage in the fetus. Is her obstetrician aware that she is back on Coumadin?

Apparently her dr. told her that it is ok to take in second trimester. She came off of it when she found out that she was pregnant (3-4 weeks) and has just recently went back on it (she is due the end of June)
I feel like I need to ask her about it but I did that night and she said it was fine so I dont' know if it is right for my motherly side to step in and say. "you want me to go with you to your next dr. appointment"

Definetly ask to go to Dr. Appt

If you are a motherly figure to her just ask her casually, it might be fun to hear the heartbeat, or something so she has no reason to say no.
Coumadin is known to cause mental retardation, blindness and other central nervos system disorders if taken during pregnancy (no matter the trimester) and can also cause spontaneous abortion and stillbirth.
I would no doubt ask the OB if it is okay and if he/she still says yes i would bring up info/statistics on its use during pregnancy. Better safe than sorry!
Hope this all works out for you and the mom and baby! Good luck!

My sister had a blood clot when 8 months pregnant. They had her on Heparin, another blood thinner. It worked fairly well for her. She developed 2nd blood clot16 years later and it was discovered that she has a blood clotting disorder. She is now on warfarin.

So if warfarin/coumadin is so dangerous, there are other, safer thinners. It should really be looked into.

Thank you all. I hinted to the best friend that I heard it was bad and she just said that the dr said it was ok, however since then my Pediatrician faxed over so stats.... I think I am going to give them to her. Very scary sounding stuff.
