Cocaine Exposure

I was just wondering if anyone could give me info on cocaine use by a PBM? She used in the 1st and 2nd month of pregnancy and is now in a reheb center. If she stays clean, will the baby be okay? Also what are good questions to ask to our agency about her use and history of addiction? Thanks!

None of us can tell you if the baby will be okay or not.

Have you researched the potential risks? Spoken with your doctor? From what I've learned, some kids who are prenatally exposed do just fine, some struggle, sometimes you don't see anything until the child is older. I'd ask what else she was using and the frequency of use.

I am afraid the first three months while everything is developing is the worst time for a pregnant woman to use ANY non-prescribed medication. The effects it has had on the fetus may not be known for years, as they may not can tell at birth what did or did not develop fully and will continue to work properly.

DH was exposed in first six weeks

Oops I meant DS! Only once which is possible as she was on probation doing weekly drops and only one came back pos. for cocaine (or anything). Our baby is great but I do know that one of his kidneys is larger than the other. So far no problems but in those early days, that is when the urogenital tract forms....also, he had ptosis where one eye appeared much smaller than the other but he's outgrown that.

I hope and pray that he will continue to thrive with us. We have had early intervention here and so far so good. We'll have them back at 12 months. That's the key.

I also know that the long term effects of cocaine on babies is not as bad as once thought....knowing what I know now I would do it again. Its a positive thing that she will have access to good nutrition and a clean place to stay! Also, they say multiply the admitted drug use X 5. Who knows...
