We have had closed adoptions......but again, there is a descrepancy in what the definition of 'closed' means.
Only one child has had an adoption where we were told 'nothing'. Absolutely nothing. To this date, BTW, this grown child has had no desire to search or 'find out', as some might assume , and the child's been an adult for some time.

In another 'closed' adoption, we had all family names (including extended) , but no health info.

In another, I met birthmom, spoke with her at length, and I suggested letters and photos for a few years----through the agency.

In yet another, we have received all info of names and medical info, and never met.

So, you can see, most of ours have been 'closed' in some form or other. Truly, this is a choice that is still being made by some birthparents.

Sincerely,

Linny

Depends on what you mean by closed. We have no contact with our younger sons birthmother. Never met her, etc. but we do send letters/pictures to the agency, although I don't know if she ever gets them. We did meet our other son's birthmother, and we send pictures/letters once a year but only using our attorney's address. She doesn't have our contact info and we don't hear from her at all.

We met our daughters bparents and they said they would contact us if they wanted to hear about her. That was 14 months ago.

It's certainly possible. We were contacted early in our process about an expectant mother who wanted a closed adoption (pregancy was the result of a rape) I think most good agencies will explain the benefits of an open adoption for the child, but in the end try to respect the birthparents' wishes on that issue and try to place with families that are on the same page.

We adopted domestic and it was a closed adoption. My daughter did open it when she was 17. She is 18 now and attends college. The bfamily are a part of her life and it has been positive.
