My husband and I are researching adopting through Monterey and Santa Clara County (we plan on moving but don't know if we'll stay in Monterey County or move to Santa Clara County).
What can I expect in terms of the process and the costs involved? We'd like to adopt an infant or toddler caucasian child. How long do you guess it could take? I'm going to an information meeting for the county of Monterey next week, but am anxious for any information before then. I look forward to reading all the posts! |

New Here with Questions on County Adoption
Hi! My husband and I are in Los Angeles County and "researching" the idea of going with the county program as well. I couldn't find the reply to your question in the Special Needs area, but would love to hear what it was and exchange any future information you may come across regarding this topic. Honestly, based on what little we know, county is not our first choice and we have many questions/concerns. It does appear though that it could be a good option for us as we are willing to adopt a female toddler of any race. Our concerns are in regards to attachement issues, and the effect of abuse or neglect. County social workers were not exactly what I would call helpful on the telephone. I would love to speak to anyone who has adopted a toddler (2 or under) through a county program. Sucessful or Not - we want to hear it all. Good luck in your adoption journey!
Terin PS - If anyone who knows the boards better than I do and feels this post would get more attention elsewhere - please let me know! THANKS!! |

Hi, we went with a private non-profit agency in California. We were presented to several counties including those you mention. We have adopted from both Santa Clara and Tehama counties. We like Santa Clara County very much. We adopted a toddler. They also have a very good post placement program. Best Wishes.

Hi! Thanks for the tip. May I ask? Did you go with the same agency both times? Would you recommend them? If you are willing to speak about your experience I would love to "chat" with you. Please feel free to reply to me privately at nubreedmom@yahoo.com
Thanks again!! Terin |

a private agency will probably search...
further afield for a placement for you. The county system will more than likely only place 'their' kids with you. That said, the younger children will be placed by the county, the private agencies contracted with the county generally place the somewhat older kids that the county has had difficulty locating homes for.
Services tend to be more comprehensive when dealing with the private agencies (although Santa Clara does a real good job here in the Bay Area). Ask plenty of questions regarding post adoption services, resources vary greatly from area to area.
