Sparking Creativity in Your Child
Children are creative beings - they create imaginary worlds, design dwelling places and build forts. Childhood is a time of natural creativity and curiosity.
We can foster this capacity in children. Here are some hints: Nourish your own creativity - be whimsical and spontaneous - create a story or poem or song. Avoid judgment, criticism and comparison - celebrate uniqueness. Honor individuality - keep an open mind and remember that creativity consists of dead ends, misconceptions as well as brilliant flashes of insight. Don't force - creativity cannot be pushed or prodded Provide resources. Pencil talk - take a large sheet of paper, some pencils, markers or crayons and have a 'conversation' with your child - the catch is you can't talk - you draw what you want to say. Space - set aside special space for creative activities. TV - turn off the TV and make up stories or creative endings to what you watch on TV. Go outdoors and watch clouds and share the pictures you see. This list comes from Thomas Armstrong, Awakening Your Child's Natural Genius Tell us about your children's creativity - how you see it expressed. What are some of your ideas which foster creativity?
